Thought I'd take a break from the 1/12th stuff and finish a Tamiya F2000 I had on the go. Waited 'till I got some Marlboro decals as they didn't come with the kit (3 sheets from China for $35.00, can't beat the price - delicate to work with but seem OK as a finished product). No, I didn't forget some of the aero bits, It's supposed to replicate Rubins Barrichello's Germany winner, so it's trimmed out to Hockenheim spec. Just some added plumbing that Tamiya forgot, other than that it's a stock build, mostly Tamiya decals, TS85 red with various clear coats. It's a nice kit, everything fits well, definately a step up from their early stuff as you'd expect - pretty much equivalent to the Fujimi Ferraris. The subject matter is a lot more modern than I usually build, I'm more a 60's and 70's guy, but a good way to see how the engineering and especially aero has evolved. I have six of the Tamiya 1/12th kits yet to build, so next up is probably the Surtees Honda.
Cheers guys

Nice job, Paul! I built that same kit not long ago but I'm not going to post pics because it looks like crap! I got lazy and decided to use the large white decals on the front wing instead of painting the white and that didn't didn't work out well. Then when I tried to fix it and it just got worse, so I said screw it and finished it up and threw it in the display case...at the back...where there are no lights. Anyway....once again, good work and let's see some of that 1/12 stuff hit the board soon!

Very nice and interesting that you chose a Rubins' car.

I did not know until this past weekend that Bariachello holds the record for the most starts in F1 at 381. I would have thought Schumi would have passed that but Rubens is the "IronMan" of F1. It was fun seeing him interviewed and his son is an up and comer in open wheel!

Nice build! Is that a "normal" gap at the bottom of the engine fairing for a Tamiya? I've experienced that problem more than once with their builds.

Very nice and interesting that you chose a Rubins' car. Rubins was a very good and under-rated driver who seemed to get the shaft no matter where he went. Also a hell of a nice guy.
Shoemaker was a jerk.
Easy choice.

Short answer, I would say yes. I've had a few too. If I press down on both sides of the fairing, the gap closes perfectly. So its not hitting anything inside. I think its just slightly warped. My F310 is the same. I could make it fit so it looked perfect if I glued it in place, but then why bother building the engine?
I don't know, maybe they just warp from being in the box for too long. I had a Brabham kit that the body couldn't be straightened even with boiling it like a lobster - it was warped in three different directions. But that was a made in Brazil Tamiya and I've had other problems with them. Now I check before I buy.

I think all these stats about race starts and race wins and most points are all meaningless anymore. In the 60's, there were 8 - 10 GP's a year. Now there are 20. And 25 pts for a win versus 9. Not to mention that back then you had a shorter life expectancy. Jackie Stewart's 27 wins from 99 starts, that impresses me. Especially considering who he raced against.
my 2 cents

I wasn't saying anything about wins just number of starts... even at 20 per year, that means Rubens raced for 19 years. That's a LONG time in any motor sport. And he was always the guy who was "let go" for some other driver. He's still ag reat interview and his son will be in F1 soon... both of them hope!
