Started this one a long time ago as an experiment. I wanted to come up with a way to improve the old AMT/Model King '72 Monte Carlo without spending a lot of money, mainly wanted to improve the interior and roll cage are. I used to build detailed, complete NASCAR cars but with the number that I'd like to build, it just isn't time efficient. So this was intended as a shelf model from the start. Goal was nice paint and decals, good stance, decent interior. I used the AMT chassis WITHOUT the interior pan. I installed an old Monogram T-bird roll cage, the GM version didn't fit as well (the Ford didn't really fit either). Some bits from the Monte, more bits (seat, dash, cooler) from the Ford. AMT tires on MPC rims. These were the first of the excellent Ol' Days sheets I've used. I consider the experiment a failed one as the work involved was WAY too much. Next Monte will get a scratchbuilt cage, should go much quicker. I was hoping to find a use for all the worthless Monogram kits I have, but oh well! This car sat on the outside pole for the September 29, 1974 Martinsville Winston Cup race, led 79 laps before crashing out on lap 150. Here you go: Failed experimental chassis: (Didn't want to waste P/E belts so I grabbed some plastic belts from the parts box and used some wire and plastic bits to do the best I could) Thanks for looking - Brian

For a failed experiment, it looks good

I see what you mean about the roll cage, nice cage just doesn't fit the roof line very well. Everything else looks great.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! I see what you mean about the roll cage, nice cage just doesn't fit the roof line very well. Everything else looks great. You're right, and that's after narrowing the whole cage to fit! Next one will be scratchbuilt, I plan on a few more Montes so I'll probably make a jig or two to speed things up.

Brian, Just about everyone here knows way more about Nascar cars then I do. But from a modeler's point of view, I'd say that your build looks pretty darn good. Excellent paint/finish, and the decals look like the vinyl stickers that they replicate. Even the seatbelts & harness looks well modeled to me. I'd say that what you consider a failure, I'd call an excellent display model.

Thanks, Joel! It was a fun build even tho it got more complicated than intended. The decals DO look like vinyl, which is too bad as back then all cars were hand lettered. I followed the maker's instructions and coated the decals before application, which made them a little thicker, plus he supplied a set of white underlays to make everything more opaque, which I coated, too. So all decals are double. Next set of this brand I use will not get coated, and depending on the color of the car, I may not use the white underlays. I really don't think I needed them on this light blue.

Is the front bumper from the kit? That chrome is very reflective.

Body, glass and bumpers are all kit parts. I clearanced the inside of the fenders as I wasn't sure which tires I was going to use, hollowed the ends of the spoiler to look like a bent sheetmetal part, and added the aluminum tube fuel vent tube. The chrome in this particular kit was excellent.

What I was referring to about the vinyl look to the decals as there's no silvering or flash. I'm just use to them being stickers and not hand painted. But certainly they do indeed look like the hand painted originals.

4w, if that is a failed attempt, I would be happy to look at it sitting on my shelf so if you get tired of it, go ahead and send it my way! I know the AMT kit and there's not much to work with there but you have done very well. I also remember the 1:1 car and I think you have represented it wonderfully. I say fail again, that looks pretty darn good to me!!
