The Postperson delivered my latest acquisitions yesterday: an IMC Lola T-70 and a Tamiya "King Cobra" nee De Tomaso/Brock group 7. I now have two IMCs, one Atlas, one Tamiya , two K & Bs and two Revell slot car bods Lola T-70s all 1/24. I feel the Atlas and the K & Bs are the most accurate. The IMCs I'll super detail other than Mecoms with Ford DOHC or Chevy with sidedraft Webers. Want to do a couple with Penske "wings" the others conventional tails but brighter colors besides the blues or reds. The "King Cobra" since it was never "Officially" a Shelby but I like the blue w/stripes and don't care for the De Tomaso red it was shown in, I will take some "Artisic License" with and mount on the excellent WIXX 1/24 Ford GT MK II diecast chassis with the beautiful 427 probably downdraft 58 mm Webers vice scratchbuilding a Lotus 30/40 "Backbone" chassis. Been stripping the blue paint from my Revell 427 Cobra "Flip Top" and unkown (probably Lancer) Daytona Coupe. It's been three weeks stripping and I still have bleached in decals color into the inside plastic, I've sanded the insides and sprayed gray primer on the Flip Top and today will spray blue metal flake followed by silver on the Daytona Coupe. These are test shots with screw holes and splits so not Primo bodies. I have never spray painted or masked a clear plastic body, using Testors spray enamel, hope they don't "curl"!

Finally found a paint stripper that works on stubborn paint. The other day my Lancer Lola GT MK VI slot body came in. It was brushed white with red stripe and lower body. Used 90% Isoprophyl Alcohol which took the white right off, the red was a problem. Used "Easy Off" let it set for about 20 minutes, it finally worked. While making radiator ducting for my Daytona Coupe today, I decided to try it again on the Lancer Ferrari P3 I love. NOTHING previously would cut that hard red brush paint, I tried EVERYTHING. This time I let it soak in "Easy Off" for 1/2 an hour. It finally started loosening it. Took three tries but most Red is off. My other P3 is in a nice jade green metallic which was extremely hard to get off. It's still there in the deep pockets. Think I'll make a David Piper P3 but will use another metallic green, don't like Pipers "Sears" green!

Thanx, Patrick. I wonder WHO did Piper's bodywork? All kinds of little area's differing from the factory Ferraris. P2 bonded to P3 bonded to something else, all little subtleties that drive a modeler Nuts. To say nothing of engines and wheels. Piper's must have been the "Elephant's Graveyard" for Ferrari Prototipi!
John Mecom also had an excellent bodyman with the Hussein and Cooper-Chevy. The Cooper (Monaco) had a unique tail that was different from the Shelby King Cobra's and it was hard for me to find a decent photo of it. Almost looks like a Lotus 30 rear deck but it did change again. I tried to buy the Hardcover "Nassau Speed Weeks" book just for the '64 Team Mecom cover sleeve but they would send me the wrong cover on it or it was overpriced. I think that is a Genie in the foreground and the Hussein did test with EIGHT smaller 2 barrel Webers (16 stacks!) another rare photo.
Anyhow, my "Bring On Another Thousand" (BOAT) is now on it's 3rd $1000 this month but it's safe and being cleaned and we got the 2nd 427 Ford "Side-Oiler" turning over.
Only sold two of my "Projects" boxes so I think I'll just sell the individual pieces. OR: If the boat quits breaking me, I think I'll keep some completed projects, I hate to see them go, but you can't keep everything. I would like to a a run of Cooper-Monaco brass chassis (like slot car brass chassis, they looked cool).  Thanx, John

Holy hop toads! you HAVE a photo of the Weber set up! Damn right a rare photo!! I recognize those Webers. They were used on the De Tomaso Typo 801 F1 car of 1962!

Great Photos makes me want to build an early Can Am car, was just looking at a AMT McLaren Elva mint in box but that's what scratcbashing is for! A Union Lola T70 (can you say Mecom!) a couple of AMT Lola T70's ( Oh Yeah!) and a bunch more.. Decisions Decisions. You guys are tempting me though.......Chris

The Hussein with the eight small Webers was extremely hard to track down. I 1st saw it in a '65 Sports Car Graphic about Nassau but didn't see it again until about 2 years ago when I saw a Hot Rod supplemental magazine article about a very young guy who was a mechanic for John Mecom. He and another guy came up with the intake manifold but I misplaced that photo.
Hey Chris: There's a lot of EIGHT 1/24 Lola T-70 bodies and three complete IMC/Union 1/25 T-70's and slot car bodies and another ad for K & B and Dynamic T-70 slot car wheels on eBay right now. Thanx, John

Fantastic photos for sure.
As for paint stripper, I've found that Denatured Alcohol works even better then Oven cleaner and is a lot safer to use toxic wise. I still use it for stripping chrome.

Good Afternoon Fellows, In the midst of doing a lot of projects at once: Mecom Hussein-Dodge, Scarab MK IV, Shelby King-Cobra, SIX cobra's and some Ferrari 330P and 365P's, and related siblings all in 1/24. Buying more off eBay and took photos today of excess items I'm putting on eBay as trade bait. The nice thing about the Mecom Hussein-Dodge, Scarab MK IV, Shelby King-Cobra is they were all built on the 1962 Cooper-Monaco chassis with different bodies, engines, transaxles and fuel tank locations. The BEST chassis donor I have found is the Burago Ferrari 250 LM (trimmed out of Burago Logo's and the AMT Hussein which had the chassis outline engraved in the lower chassis pan. The AMT Willard Battery Special provides a very accurate chassis (suitably modified) just bend the tubing to follow the AMT Hussein underside chassis outline, the dual oval transaxle and engine mounts I made from the dual 4-barrel 426 hemi air cleaner just about the perfect size after hogging out. The AMT Lotus 29 gives a good Colotti trans and 289 ford. All the 426 Hemi's are HUGE and hard to trim down shorter to fit the Hussein which is impossible. Looking thru my depleted magazine collection, the Feb 1962 and April 1965 Sports Car Graphics give very good chassis layouts to fab the AMT into a Cooper chassis. Attaching Photos of the SCG magazine covers and center spread. These are the best references I've found so far. If you like the old, tube framed "Big Bangers" before the monocoques took over this trio makes some great cars. Thanks for viewing. John    |
