Martin, please check out my thread on page 11 for some build notes that you should be aware of in the future!

Hi Martin! I was beginning to think you and Jim were next to be seen on the side of a milkcarton!
As far as your brass collectors go, I think there is far too much "texture" (not saying mine are anywhere near smooth) especially the bottom shot. I know these were white to begin with if they are the kit parts and metal if they are part of the KA upgrade, but I feel like they should be as smooth as possible since they are rolled metal. Of course, we are looking at these very close up... I also think they tend more to the "gold" than brass... but then again, brass is pretty yellow. Don't know if you plan on "blazing" them... I am going to build another engine complete with pipes straight from the kit but I am going to do the primer/gloss black/Alclad treatment on the second go round and see what happens!
Glad to see you are back with us!

I am going to build another engine complete with pipes straight from the kit but I am going to do the primer/gloss black/Alclad treatment on the second go round and see what happens! Glad to see you are back with us! Ha ha, no, not quite THAT aloof! The photo (as photos tend to do) makes the texture appear a lot rougher than it really is. In order to bend the tube, I annealed it quite severely before bending; so at the moment any slight touch leaves a mark. I will prime them before painting so I am confident they will come out nice and smooth, which is something I feared I could never achieve with the KA collectors or pipes with the material they use. I really hated the shape of both the kit and KA parts so thought it worth giving it a go. For that reason alone, I am heading towards using these brass units and the plastic supplied headers. But, as we've seen from some of the photos; the odd dent/ding in the pipes wasn't unusual, so I won't be too unhappy if there is the odd mark or two. I am planning on painting the pipes a very dull gold/brown colour by using the SMS paints 'Dark Bronze' with a flat clear to really kill any shine. I do have their 'Rose Gold' too so can add some highlights if required. I'm not planning on any blazing (even though I think yours look superb) but I will add some colour to the ends and highlight the joins/wends in the pipes. In addition to the above, I've also made a starter motor, oil filter assembly and finished the ignition wiring. Haven't been able to paint the starter or oil filter yet, so little to really show - But I've been making slow progress.

That's a good start on those collectors Martin. Seems like every time I take a photo (particularly those Macro or high resolution shots) every little thing becomes severely magnified. I've gotten to where I use photos as a tool during the build process to help me spot stuff that I normally wouldn't see.

I've gotten to where I use photos as a tool during the build process to help me spot stuff that I normally wouldn't see. Thanks Mustang. I kinda like to show anything I make in the unfinished mode because otherwise it loses it's 'history' when a final (complete) shot is taken. The aim is that the final item looks too natural to notice it; so you never see the process. Yeah, photos seem to always show dust or any slight imperfections. Must be something with our brains dismissing those kind of things with our eye whereas a photo clearly points them out - which like you say, can be a very good way of highlighting errors. I am a draftsman (draftsperson, in 2021) by trade. We print out our drawings purely because it gives a new 'light' to the drawing, and highlights errors you don't see on screen - especially if you've been staring at it for a few days!

You can see what a mess I made of the collectors trying to use solder... in close up, it's really bad... but when just glancing, it really isn't that bad! Glance... Close-up... what a mess...

Martin,
Your collectors looks fantastic. I'm the king of close ups that show every little error, mark, ding or dent. None of which I ever really see while working on the model. We're looking at parts greater then 1:1 which is the problem but necessary so that our posted pictures show what we're doing.

You can see what a mess I made of the collectors trying to use solder... in close up, it's really bad... but when just glancing, it really isn't that bad! I did consider using solder with the supplied KA parts to 1) ensure a good connection and 2) attempt to add the welded look at the connections, but I was unsure if this metal could actually be soldered. I was also naturally cautious of attempting to solder anywhere near the rest of the model! I appreciate that even at this scale things like welds can be easily dismissed as unnecessary; but some pictures of the collector/pipe weld joints look very large agricultural so I think you're being a little too harsh on yourself, Patrick, as I think you've definitely achieved that 'welded' look. You also have a couple of 'dented' areas (by design or accident) and - like I've said before - great colouring.

OK, A slight diversion, but definitely the biggest modelling challenge of the build by far. How am I going to make this look like Ken Miles?! A massive nose would do it! Actually, it would be really cool to do him with the duffle coat, bobble hat and glass of champers, post race!

Whoa whoa whoa! I'm not going to be buying some doll set to steal clothes from. Gawd knows this project has cost me enough already...
I think... open-face helmet on. Make some goggles/sunglasses. Add a nose, chin and a pint of Mild in his hand. Done.

Martin, This certainly will be a 1st as no one here has ever tried to model Ken Miles in any scale. Looking forward to what you actually come up with.
