Hello new modeling friends!
Since Chris took the time and effort to start this sub category I figured it would be a good chance for me to post up my work on this beautiful car.
I'm going to be the red headed step child here and finish the car as #2 in black, like the box art. My goal is to have fun with this build, learn a few new tricks and have something to look good on the shelf when done. Basically my goal for all my builds! Hopefully each one is better than the last. And maybe others can learn from my many mistakes!
I'm using the Magnifier kit with the KA Model upgrade with metal parts and whatever else I have lying around. Kit tires, kit decals, bare bones except for the KA set. The KA set is the most I ever spent on an upgrade, twice the kit cost, and I was afraid that it might not have been worth it. Now, the more I use it the happier I am that I purchased it and would recommend it to anyone building this kit, it does make a big difference. Oh, I do have the Indycals tire decals which I thought would just be the blue stripe around the tires, but its not so not sure if I'll use them.
Any help, praise and criticism is welcome here.
Anyway, I wanted to get this thread started so I'm committed to posting my progress, which I'll have some photos up tomorrow.
Jim

I built the Fujimi kit of P1046. Look forward to seeing your much more detailed build Jim of this car.

Thanks for stopping by JC, hope you can lend a hand and point me in the right direction time to time. So, since I originally didn't plan on doing a build log I didn't take in progress pictures of what has been accomplished so far. So lets get up to date: A good portion of the engine has been built, used some PlusModel resin bolts that I've had lying around in various areas, painted some black wire orange for the plug leads, used a piece of vinyl tubing left over from a 1/20th Tamiya kit for the belt, and following Patrick's lead added a crankcase breather. Finally checked that everything would clear with the turkey pan in place.
I also started cleaning up the rear clip and opening the vents which Trumpy left all closed:
And where I am now. In my haste of trying to figure out how to paint the exhausts I forgot to add some fine details from the KA kit. I'm just going to heat up the PE parts to give them some color and hopefully get them attached. Looks better in person with the blue not being so bright!
Here are some other parts naked:
And heat treated:
That's it for now.

Looks good Jim. I don't like the kit intake manifold, but you can barely see it when it's all done, so why worry! I do like your distributor solution, I usually have the wires come off 4 per side like that - I find nothing ever fits afterwards when they come out the top no matter how hard I try. Looks neater too. Oh, great looking exhausts!

Wow, Jim! Your distributor came off looking much, much better than mine. I chose to use flat black on the water pipes around the front of the engine. Can't tell you exactly why except that I had stripped the kit chrome off and since Molotow takes literally for ever to dry, they went flat black... I am using shrink wrap to simulate the joiners between pipes. What did you use for the fan belt? Also, the use of the gold on the starter motor is very striking! The KA PE parts for the connection between collectors and exhaust pipes was incomplete as there was no side provided for the exhaust... only the collectors. I purchased a generic set of Top Studio exhaust connectors and chose on the looks like the kit. Top Studio does not attach their small PE parts to the overall sheets so there are no little "nubs" to file off. That is a great help! But tiny? OH MY GOD! Sorry you missed that step about the pieces for the last two exhaust tubes. I think I read about doing the PE for the exhausts prior to painting so I was forewarned. I will be glad to move along from the engine itself. I just wonder what those were for... here is a photo of them in place. How did you attach the springs across the tail pipes? One side is pretty easy but the other... whew! Looks great, my friend! Keep on keepin' on!

By the way, looking at your engine... on the rear there is a "U-shaped" piece that is part of the suspension. According to KA, you need to clip the tops of the two "c" brackets that hold the "U" in place. Those rounded brackets are what connect the "cable" to hold the rear "clamshell" open at a 90 degree when opened. I noticed you hadn't installed the two circular clips that replace what you clipped off. Here is where they go...

Thanks Paul, yeah the intake will pretty much be hidden and so will the distributor which is why I "cheated" on that (actually I just get lazy sometimes!)
LOL Patrick, my distributor looks like dog poop compared to yours! Yeah, I stripped ALL the chrome of first thing. Instead of Molotow have you tried Alclad polished aluminum or chrome? They are fragile like Molotow so if I'll be doing extra work on them I'll shoot a coat of clear. Takes away a bit of the 'pop' on those colors but still looks pretty good. All that work back there will be hidden anyway.
I used a piece of leftover tubing for the belt, thought it added a little more thickness. Again, probably will never be seen!
I did manage to get the little PE parts on that I missed all over, need to pay more attention to what I'm doing. Will do better from now on, I hope! I don't think there are any other connectors for the pipes past the collectors

Just like so many kits, especially aircraft, tanks, ships, anime, sci-fi... well basically every kit... you do all that work for yourself! Isn't it odd we do that?

So how are you going to get the fabricated metal look on the "turkey pan"? The kit part looks a bit thick doesn't it... and I love the square patch in the actual photo on the part!
Also, the springs on the tail pipes... how did you get them to stay in place?

Thank you Bill! Lots of mistakes so far but I think I'm starting to get my head wrapped around this one a little better.

Also, the springs on the tail pipes... how did you get them to stay in place? Started working on that over the weekend after I saw how awful the kit part looked, I think it may work. Not sure if I can do the rolled edge neatly with wire, if not will leave it off. Will find out next weekend!
Those springs...I glued the ends between the pipes first. When they were solid I stretched the spring slightly over the pipe, through the holes and hooked it on the PE edge. Glued them underneath and trimmed off the excess when dry. Of course the glue didn't hold on the first try for a couple of them! I tried wire through them but didn't like the way they looked.

That's pretty much the approach I'm going to take on the springs. But I thought I would do the springs nice and secure and slip the pipes under them.
Did you use the kit part to make a "buck" for the fabricated part? I'd be curious to know... you do know the term "buck", right?

Yes I did, except the styrene part is flat in the back under the plate, and I rounded both ends. We'll see how it looks when done, if it'll be an improvement or not.

I have an idea that I may be able to use an aluminum soda can if it is not too flimsy! Is there an added piece used to intake air on the front side of the turkey pan? Will you just ignore that?
