The 1/1 car forum is back at it, this time with a Sebring-themed group build. Mine will be Tamiya's AMG-GT3 in Riley Motorsports/Wynn's livery. I've started doing some preliminary painting, today. I got the decals and paint as part of a package deal from Splash Paints. Painting the body will be time-consuming, but the rest of the build should go pretty fast. These newer Tamiya kits go together like Legos. Ben

Primer. I'll give it a good polish in a day or two and then I'll start with the gloss white. Fortunately, SK provides masks with the decals. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't have tried to tackle this livery. I've got almost all of the other parts painted, so the chassis will go together pretty quickly. Ben

Strange that the kit helps me appreciate the car more.

Strange that the kit helps me apricate the car more. Yeah, the car is slowly growing on me. Except for the TR6, Lotus 7, and maybe the Honda S2000, I've never been a fan of the long hood/short rear look like this car and the Z4. The livery was what tempted me to get the kit and now I'm having a ball building it. Ben

These Tamiya kits are a joy to build! They just click together. The Mercedes emblem on the steering wheel is a chrome dry transfer/sticker thing. The rearview mirrors and body logos are chrome stickers, too. Pretty cool! Ben

Ben, Nice start to the Wynn's Merc AMG GT3 build. Really a nice job on detail painting the rear shocks/springs. I'm looking forward to seeing how you work your painting magic on this one as even with masks it won't be a "walk in the park".

Looking good Ben! I'm sure you'll pull it off! I like this car. It sounds amazing! I've also seen a few roadgoing AMGs of this. Gorgeous looking car.
Thanks, Ismael

Ismael, My other hobby is Auto Sim racing, and specifically GT3 & GT4 cars. I can tell you that both the C6,C7, and the Merc AMGs have the best sounding V8s on the track. OMG, my computer actually shakes when I drive the big Merc AMG GT3 in one sim and the Aston Martin Vantage V8 GT3 in the other but just don't have that deep throated bellow sound. I drive the same street version cars in the GT4 classes with V8s as well, but the sound just isn't the bone jarring same.

The Lexus RC F GT3 has a nice, thunderous roar, too. I'll miss feeling the Corvette's noise in my chest as they go by. Not that the C8R's new flat-plane crankshaft engine sounds bad....

The C8R sounds very different and I'm sure it will grow on me. And it is already. But I miss this:
Never had the chance to see a C7R in anger but I have great memories of the C6Rs in Atlanta.
Thanks, Ismael

The masks fit pretty well. I tweaked them a little to make sure the decals cover the breaks between the colors. I thought I had them pressed down enough to avoid seepage, but they still lifted in spots. I should have sealed the edges with clear gloss, but I got lazy this time. Lesson learned. I'll clean up the edges, just in case a decal doesn't line up, and paint the black areas around the side windows, then it will be time for decals. The Splash paint performed flawlessly, as usual. The base coats were Tamiya white primer and TS-26 Pure White. Ben

That's going to look very sharp with the decals on.
I'm with JC, the kit is getting me to like the car even more.

Ben, Believe me, I can feel your pain with color seepage under the masks, it use to be a major issue for me. Now I apply a few lite tack coats of the color that's going to be air brushed on. It will also seal the edged as good as Clear gloss does. I found that the amount and stickiness of tapes and masks varies all over the place, so I made my own burnisher tool out of (now don't laugh), a wooden chop stick. Just bluntly rounded the business end. Works great, and way better then a Qtip that leaves little cotton hairs everywhere.
The two colors over white really do look quite good.
I've always assumed that the long hood on the Merc AMG and BMW Z4 allows the engine to be moved further back so that there's less oversteer when braking.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! I burnish the masks with my fingernail and a wood stick I got from somewhere. I think part of my problem was I had to reposition the masks a couple of times, which killed the adhesion. I think you’re right about moving the engine back for weight distribution. The design just rubs my sense of proportions wrong. The car is definitely growing on me, though. Better looking than the Z4 for sure! Ben
