Hi - Been a lurker for awhile & thought I'd share some pics of some concours builds I did in the past. These were all HO slot cars & vac-formed bodies, with a few exceptions. Thanks for looking,
Dave Ferguson

Welcome Dave, Your name sounds familiar, I was a founding member of HOUROC ( H O Unlimited Racers of California) with Gary Beetle, Jim Cauthon, Dennis Hill and others we raced HO big time back in the 60's and 70's with members going on to create the BSRT line and we had a couple of National Champions as well. We had a couple of rules for the car, ( max. 3 in long, Max. 1 5/16 wide and must be theme cars like INDY 500, Lemans 24 etc, thats all and why it was called Unlimited) I still have a ton of T-Jet and Unlimited stuff, track and several Hundred Lexan bodies. Santa Ana Raceways was my Dad's slot car shop. He invented the Iso-Fulrum chassis used by everyone ever since and did Masters for Cox slot car bodies too. I have some interesting Brass Pan T-jets with Lexan bodies. Your cars are very cool I enjoyed Concourse class a lot, its probably what led me to Model Building. Welcome I look forward to seeing more.. Chris

Hi, Chris - For two guys who've never met, we sure have a lot of people in common! I was a late arrival to the HOUROC program - 1971-84. Those were great times & some of my best memories as an HO racer. As you pointed out, HOUROC had quite the group of racers back then. I was proud to even be a small part of it. Question, how do I add some more pics to this thread. I had no problem with the first three, but I don't see an obvious button, maybe it's just me & I'm missing it. Any help you could give would be appreciated. Thanks, Dave

To add more use the Reply button not the Quick Reply again you will have to do 3 at a time or go to the Introductions category to find out how to use a Photo service like Fotki or similar to download photos that way, I use both depending. Were you from Orange County Ca. back then? Just wondering.. Chris

Hey, Chris - No, when I first started w/HOUROC, I was in high school & living in Torrance. Nick Toma lived across town and we started commuting to the monthly races & Opens in '72. He and I were at the very first HOUROC Open - in fact we pitted next to Dale Flanagan in Cawthon's back yard! (on a flower planter, lol). I didn't move to OC 'til much later. Here's a few more builds....Thanks for the help w/the photo attachments...

This June 71 article was all about HOUROC and the track shown was in Santa Ana Raceways. Dale's wife did the article, I think it was a one off deal. Yeah, I really liked the No Rules, well bare minimum, the fact the cars had to be specific to the race, usually meaning you had to build a new car for each or at least a new body and most I enjoyed the Concourse, of course I won the Concourse Yearly points award the first several years, We did a 69 or 70 INDY 500 and I used a Slimline Brabham to make a 68 Gurney Olsonite Eagle that was very nice, one car I wash I still had. It was kind of a dog and had no chance of winning but I finished the race. Jim Cauthon's track was the one we used the most I think,. He was the National Champion in one of those years. I cant find my HO cars pics but when I do I will post some of my cars. I know we were doing Brass cars about 2 years before the guy on "Brass Wars" claims they started it all. A couple of guys came out from the East Coast for a big race and they were so far behind us technology wise they are Embarrassed to this day. It was interesting that you could build a whole car the way you wanted as long as you met the Race theme, guys tried all sorts of stuff , some very humorous. Mura can motors stuck on a HO Chassis with a body draped over, so top heavy they couldnt make a single corner. Just all sorts of wacky stuff but guys like Beetle made some absolute Rockets, I wasnt surprised when I saw His BSRT Cars come out and blew everybody away for many years, I spoke with him about 10 years ago and He was doing very well for himself because of it. Well so many memories so little brain matter to tell it all. I will see if I can find those pics or maybe just take some more. I was building new Stores for Pep Boys in the early 80's and travelled the West a lot, Everywhere I went I looked up the local Slot and Hobby shops, I went in and made cash offers on all their Aurora track, and Aurora factory parts bins, most had not sold anything in years and I got most of it for pennies on the dollar. I have parts to build maybe 50 or more new cars, AJ's parts, Parma, Riggen, Russkit (Jim Russell was my Dad's best friend) and tons more I intend on getting back into it here when I slow down on Model Cars. Some Lola T-70 Coupes... The Sunoco car was based on a Rhino shell, the red Surtees Coupe & the Lola Aston-Martin both used the exquisite Motoi (Japan) shell. Hope you like 'em...

I can see why you probably won in Concourse a lot, Very Realistic and Awesome work, particularly since its HO!!. Makes my HOUROC unlimited stuff look downright primitive!! LOL This Ti-22 was built in 1970 ? has a Brass Pan Style, Iso fulcrum chassis , shimmed magnets ,lightened gears, a Parma armature, and lots of bench time.. Chris

Hey, Chris (& co.) - Here's a couple more HO builds, plus one of my current project - a 3-lane routed club track w/some minor scenery touches. The Nissan Bridge is actually a Trackmate timing bridge, but it looked pretty bleak out of the box. I added the spans from a Bachmann HO Pedestrian Bridge plus some styrene to give it a bit of character.

Hey, Chris - Been awhile. Thought I'd reach out and see if you had any vintage HO bodies you'd part with... I'm looking for some Kirby bodies - specifically the 512S (which was actually the wedge-shaped show car with a hundred louvers on the back deck) and the wide version of the Chevron B16 (looks like a 917 coupe, but pinched in the waist). If you're interested, lemme know what you have & we'll go from there. Thanks, Dave

Dave I have hundreds of HO Bodies and I know some are Kirby's, Lots of Mura, Lancer and more... I traveled for my job, building stores for Pep Boys and in the small towns I would go in and the owner if they had any Aura stuff left and then make them an offer for Bodies, Aurora Factory Parts Drawers (full of parts), Aj's , Parma etc, plus hundreds of pieces of track most Aurora AFX and T-Jet stuff. I will take a look in the morning and let you know. Chris
