This is the Meng 1/24th kit I acquired a while ago. I've never seen a Meng kit before, I know they have a good rep with their military stuff, so being in desperate need of a DECENT!! GT40 kit, and a break from the big stuff, here goes. I was thinking it would be a fill in distraction while building something else, but once I started I just kept going. But I did take pics. This is, by far, the best quality kit I've ever seen. The detail is remarkable, the down side, a lot of it is built in. So if you like detail painting with a tiny brush, this is for you. These are the first two pieces I did. It's just 2 pieces:
Yep, lots of masking and lots of brush work.
Following the instructions so far, but going with my own paint colours based on the restored #2 car in North Carolina I think.
Odd way to build an engine but you'll see what they have in mind later.
The parts fit is perfection, but very very precise. Test fit of main body:
Note the "hood" is a separate piece. It's meant to be glued in place, but..........
OK, it's going to be an OOB build, I promise.

This is how they do the exhausts
At least they're not all separate bits!
You install them onto the heads and intake, and it all fits perfectly:
And then you install that on top of the engine block:
Slick as you can get. I've deviated from the assembly order like usual, the firewall is supposed to go on later but I like to make sure everything will fit down the road.
So a view from above:
Cockpit:
The kit comes with photo etch and paper seat belts, but they're black, so I used some Tamiya ones I had lying around (because they're blue)
Wheels on:
Another test fit of the body.

That's looking great! I've read some good things about that kit.

Thanks Ben. Let's try this again.
If you want the OOB build, skip this part and glue the hood shut.
IMC on left, Meng on right. You know where this is going.
So I salvaged my scratch built rack, oil tank and lines, plus the rad, and some surgery to get this bit
I rather enjoyed carving up the IMC

The whole lot fit quite nicely inside the Meng. A little touch up painting and......
The rest is simple, finish off the body and install.

At this point, I didn't like the ride height, then I realized the front spindles were upside down. Easy fix!
I used the kit decals, which are excellent. No, you don't get the little Fern. Yes, I know Indycals has it. The rear grill is a nice piece of photo etch, really helps the look.
Finished glamour pics to follow.
I really should have dusted it first!

With the hood open, I think the extra work helps the kit a lot (spare is from the IMC - yes it fits!)

They do supply window masks if you want to paint the black around the edges, I didn't use them. Believe it or not, I use decals when I want to do that!
So, opened up to display the business end:
I put some brown wash on the exhausts just to tone them down a bit.
There is an inner liner for the rear clam complete with all the shrouding and brake ducts - I've never seen that on any 1/24th kit before.
Everything fits exactly the way it should.
By far the best kit I've ever worked on. The quality, especially for the price, is remarkable.
I give it a 9.5 out of 10.

Paul, an excellent version of this car. And almost OOB too. If I didnt have so many Ford GT kits already I would be looking for this one. I see 9.5 out of 10.0 , what was its slight down fall that kept it from being a 10.0 ? The engine bit is a little strange as far as the way it is assembled in several stages but like you say , I see why they did that. Thanks for the review and W.I.P. it was informative and easy to follow. chris

Chris, I deducted half a point as I think they could have included the bit's under the hood - after all they made it a separate piece!
Also there is no wiring or tubing included, but that's easy enough to get AM so I really don't fault them.
It really shows how good a kit can be with modern day CAD/CAM and new molds etc, you won't believe how well everything fits until you have it in your hands.
Problem is I'm really tempted to buy the 1/12th version, but right now I can't afford it.
Cheers Paul

OK, I get it. Unfortunately the reviews of the 1/12 scale kit have not been so kind, most relating it to a simplified Trumpeter kit. So maybe do some research on that before you Pop for it. It is not impossible, I have read some poor reviews on various kits but after building it and some minor re-engineering the kit had a Jewel.. Check it out... www.facebook.com/groups/256014074568499 is a good big scale group to ask questions. Chris
