I'm going to attend the race this year. I have never been to Laguna Seca. Is there a preferred vantage point at the track for viewing the race? I have general admission tickets. I'll be staying in San Francisco and driving to the track on Saturday and Sunday. Is there particular route that is best for making that trip?

Robhart, It is a good 2 hour drive SF to Laguna. Just consider that. SF to Laguna...nice drive, Highway 1 South. Faster drive, Highway 280 South to Highway 17 South gets you to Santa Cruz. Then South on Highway 1 to Monterey (really Sand City, but the track turn-off is there.) and to Laguna. in Seaside you'll see the signs for the track.
As to best spot...well, Laguna is one of those tracks that has alot of good spots, but you must visit the "Corkscrew". It's a heavenly turn. Bona Fortuna!

All the track is great viewing but as Patrick says spend some time at the corkscrew.. If you happen to run into Jordan Taylor 2013 DP Drivers Champ , tell him Chris Hale says "Hi" we are friends..by the way The Velocity Worldwide #10 DP Corvette is going to be unveiled at Long Beach as a T-Top not quite a convertible DP Corvette. I got a note from Wayne Taylor saying Drivers changes are gonna be a breeze!!! Cant wait to see it!!!! Chris

The races were great despite none of the Fords winning anything. Some upsets and surprising finishes. TV does not do justice to Laguna Seca. It has to be visited to be truly appreciated. The corkscrew live is a major thrill. On Saturday I managed to get a nasty sunburn while freezing my butt off on a windy and partially overcast day. I slathered on so much sun block for Sunday that I looked like an extra from a zombie movie.
