Back around 1970, in Cal Club we had some driver injuries in Formula and Sports Racing cars from things like getting under guard rails (Jackie Stewart's favorite "Safety Device")and wheels and chassis of other Formula cars getting on top. RCA and Zink Formula Vees got forward braces on their roll bars to provide some protection. I felt that Formula and Sports Racers should have roll cages. I remember in '73 going out on the tow truck at Riverside during a Vee race. A driver named Irvine (can't recall his 1st name) was sitting in the dirt off the esses with the front tire of another Vee sitting in his lap and against the face of his full face helmet. After checking with him, we hand lifted the other Vee off him. Fortunately NOT substantially injured, but it was very close to killing him. That reinforced my desire for roll cages on Formula cars. Another incident involved a Formula Ford that got upside down and the factory roll bar snapped out of the 4130 (actually the English equivalent of 4130) frame rail. Serious injuries resulted from that and last month I ran across my dad's pictures of the car afterward. Such situations played a substantial role in my building an offroad race buggy with a 7-point roll cage a couple of years later instead of buying a Vee or Formula Ford.
