Building this 911 RSR Turbo from the Fujimi Circuit Wolf kit, sans decals. Thought I would fictionalize this with my own paint and graphics. My question(s) are what class would all Porsce race cars be in in the US. I am hoping Richard can help me out, or any one else with information that cares to jump in. SCCA, club racing, IMSA,turbos and non, wide body, big or little wings or none at all, years being 60's through 80's. The more I google the more confusing it gets. Thank in advance. The FIA designation would be Group 5, the designation in the US depending on the Sanctioning body>> well I hope I am close...IMSA-GTO, SCCA-GT1 or B Production? and ??

I don't think it would fit anywhere in SCCA, maybe A-Sports Racing if it showed up at a Regional/National weekend; but certainly not in any GT or Production classes.

I agree with Chris that in the late 70s or later it would get stuck in GT-1 like OldTimer's Camaro for club racing. In '74 there was only 1 category of SCCA racing that would allow Turbo Porsches. That being A/Sports racing. This Porsche would never have fit into the SCCA "Production" category in the 60s or early 70s. But from about '76 on, it would have been allowed in the more "open" GT categories as in GT-1. Sports Racing category with McLarens and Lolas and such was always the dumping ground for any entrants whose race car didn't fit the rules in another category. I've told before in these pages of a guy who showed up at a race at Riverside with a a 1968 Shelby GT500 KR convertible. He was told 1st, that he would not be eligible for a race until he attended and completed Driving School. He thought several times to the local drag strip for weeknite bracket racing qualified him as an expert race car driver. Further, he was told his new car was not eligible for any class. So he would have to race in A/Sports Racing with those McLarens like Bill Cuddy's M8D sitting next to his Mustang in the Tech lines. He'd never thought of the existence of a rule book. 1st day of Driving School and he never showed up again.
IMSA didn't have categories for such cars other than GT, later called GTO and GTU. Only place available in IMSA for Porsche to put up turbo cars.
