It looks like some kind of junkyard parts project. Imagine what it would be worth today.

The photos are by Dave Friedman. Team Shelby was starting design of the coupe using a chassis from a wrecked roadster. They are trying to work out seat position. Gurney drove for Shelby at the time, not aware of AAR being involved with the creation or development of the Daytona Coupe.

A year or two ago, Peter Brock had a great article in Classic Motorsports about the design and construction of the Daytona Coupe. One of the photos was the one above. I tried to find out what issue that was, but my Google Foo has failed me this morning.

Because Carroll Shelby and Dan Gurney started AAR as partners a lot of design , testing etc was done at AAR in Santa Ana, Ca. those photos appear to be taken in the AAR lot. After they split I dont think Shelby came around much. Dan had told me the split was in part because Shelby became the Only Factory Distributor of Goodyear Racing Tires in the USA, besides the obvious lack of room Shelby relocated to Los Angeles and left AAR. In about 1998 I had to locate a set of Goodyear Super Modified Tires for a customer and had to contact Shelby as they were still the only Factory authorized Distributor.. Chris

Carroll Shelby was like Mickey Thompson. Pretty bright car guy, but more importantly, a very shrewd business man. Probably what got Mickey murdered though. Back in the day, every time I crossed paths with Dan Gurney, it was a pleasant meeting. With Carroll and Mickey, not necessarily so.
In those pics, note that the floor board of that Cobra is a piece of cardboard box. High Tech...not so much.
