I'm wrapping up a couple of Porsches, a 356A Speedster and a 904, which are among my first non-rod & custom style projects. I've been a confirmed kit-basher my whole modeling life and these projects are proving to lean that way, too, despite the fact that I have almost zero inventory of sources to "bash" from. So my question is, what are the classic source-kits, and/or aftermarket suppliers, for bits like fog lamps, rear view mirrors, period correct tires and wheels, ignition bits, etc. Right now the 356A, for example, is semi-stalled waiting on a source for rear view mirrors (the vintage Revell kit I used doesn't appear to have any) where I would love to use either the faired-in streamlined fender mirrors (I may have to sculpt some out of styrene) or some classic Raydyot units. A proper selection of period fog lights would be nice, too, for planned future projects. I have already discovered foreign sources like Scale Production and Highlight Model Studio, but minimum orders and shipping costs have so far prevented me from pulling the trigger. Randy at Modeler's Warehouse is trying to function as a one-stop aggregator sourcing from top-notch suppliers like Scale Production and Historic Racing Miniatures, but availability can be variable and I need to encourage him to stock the critical detail bits as they occur to me.
So what say you? In the hot rod world I have go-to parts kits like the Revell/Monogram '28-'30 Ford Pickup and sedan kits, the Revell 1/25th scale Deuce kits, the Tony Nancy Double Dragster kit, and the various MPC/Round2 permutations on the old Ramchargers FED kit. For this decidedly old school (mid 20th century) modeler similar kits in the sports car world would be invaluable. And, of course, a hit list of key aftermarket suppliers, too.
