Another blue McLaren. This time it will be the #24 car from the 1995 Le Mans. (courtesy of Motorsport.com) This gentleman's model was what inspired me to buy the kit and track down the decals from Shunko: LINK I'll be using the same paint and decals he used. Take some time to look through his other builds. He's a heck of a modeler! I just started the preliminary work, yesterday. The kit sills stick out at an odd angle and are too thin for the decals that will go there. They're just roughed-in right now. I need refine things a little. I don't really like the separate doors, and the way the kit is designed, you can't glue them in place before you add the interior parts, so it's going to complicate things a little. Ben

Ben, Just a great choice of cars for your next build. I just love those McLarens. I'll be checking out that link shortly. You can be assured that I'll be following your build start to finish, as I've got the Aoshima Long tail LeMans 1997 Gulf car in my stash.

I’ve got the Aoshima long tail, too. From what I’ve gathered, the Fujimi long tail is kind of a mess, with both road car and race car features.

I've seen the Fujimi kit built up in a few vids on You Tube, and it looks pretty good. The Aoshima kit is at whole different level of detail, and the Cartograf decals actually will save me from buying AM decals, which is a very rare occurrence for me. I've already bought the proper paint colors from Gravity, but honestly, I haven't a clue when I'm going to actually build it as I keep on buying more kits (most old kits of favorite cars) that then become my next build. Joel I've had the same problem. I keep finding new subjects I want to build. One interesting thing about the long tail in Gulf colors, a guy on Britmodeller who has seen the car up close said that the dark sides of the car were actually a very dark brown, instead of black. I've found a couple of pics online that seem to confirm this. The the trim on the decals is black, so that's what I'm going to use when I eventually get around to building it. I'd hate to have to match a dark brown to some decals! Ben

For the first time in months, I finally had some time to work on a model! Here is an older picture; I'll; post the most recent pics as soon as I have time to download them from my phone. It's a great kit, and things went well, right up until I started applying the decals. That's when I started causing myself a lot of self-inflicted wounds. I had forgotten to mask the curved parts of the silver stripe on the rear deck, so you can see blue paint peeking around the orange stripes. The Tabu Design decals perform well, but I had to remove one on the front fender, managing to damage the paint in the process. The Gulf logo that goes on the wing was temperamental, and I managed to mess that up, too. There were also issues with the number panels, but I'll wait until I have pics of them before I describe that problem. Sorry for the rant. We all sometimes have models that just don't go right, in spite of our best efforts, and this just happens to be one of them. I think part of it is I was rushing. "I've got 15 minutes free, I've got to put some more decals on the McLaren so I can finish it!" It's just going to have to be (another) four-footer. Ben

Another quick shot, with all of the decals applied. I was able to paint the silver bits on the rear deck that follow the curve of the orange decals. The Tabu instructions showed both the #24 and #25 cars on the same decal placement picture. They didn't specify that only the #25 had French flags, in addition to the British flags, and they showed both flags on the drawing. After I had applied the French flag decals and hit the one on the front fender with multiple applications of Solvaset, to get it to conform with the nooks and crannies on the model. After noticing that the #24 car didn't have the French flags, I pulled them off with tape. The Solvaset had melted the decal on the fender to the point where I damaged the paint while removing it. Fortunately, the dark blue somewhat hides the repair. Next, the #24 and 25 cars had larger squares for the number boards. Tabu only provides small squares, with L-shaped decals to "enlarge" them. Fine in theory, but you end up with either dark lines where they don't meet up properly or white lines where they overlap, plus they only provide two instead of three. I figured I'd just use some white decal film to make correctly-sized squares, but the Expert's Choice film I used broke up on contact with the water. I gave up and cut some rectangles with leftover white decals from the Tabu sheet. It worked okay on the hood, but the topography of the doors prevented a good match with all of the decals. White touch-up paint (sort of) to the rescue! The Gulf logo on the wing looked great when I took the picture, then I sliced it at the gap between the two wing sections, causing it to crack and fold in places. More white touch-up paint. So, this is where the model stands right now. It's ready for a wipe down and clear coat and then I can finish the cockpit. It's been a comedy of self-inflicted errors, but it's coming along. Thanks for letting me vent. Ben

Ben, I wondered what happened to you. Glad to see that you got some quality bench time in. The decaling looks darn good to me. Is this the Fujimi kit?

Thanks! Yes, it's the Fujimi kit (#126029). It's a great curbside kit and fits well. I've just been ham-fisted with the decals. I've been known to do that on a model, occasionally. Race photos show the entire sides of the car covered in road grime and brake dust due to the heavy rain they had during most of the race. Maybe I should try my hand at weathering to hide the decal problems! Ben

Ben, Still she's looking real good.
I'd really think about weathering for the sake of covering up any decal flaws. While weathering looks easy, it's really hard as you're trying to duplicate Mother Nature.
I've thought about the Fujimi kit but my brother bought the Aoshima kit as a break from aircraft, then as usual decided against it, so I got it from him at a super price. It's the Gulf car, and the paint job and decaling already has me thinking of more excuses not to start it sometime after the GB on AutoModeler.

Yeah, I don’t like weathering models, so I rarely do it, even on my airplanes.
Gravity Colors sells the Gulf Pearl Blue for the Gulf long tail car. I have a few other builds I want to do before I dive into my long tail kit.
