This is a car I really want to be right, but it's an original issue Tamiya kit I've had on a shelf since the mid 80's ($25.95 price tag on the box!). It leaves a lot to be desired, not just fit but a lack of detail and parts that really should be there but they just didn't bother with. Anyway I've got this far but now I'm stuck waiting for some decals from Indycals - I want to clearcote it before I go any further.
When I get it assembled I'll try to add the missing plumbing and cooling.
Any suggestions what to do with the wings? The real car was polished aluminum, the chrome plate on the kit is going to look cheap and fake.
cheers
Paul

Hey, Paul!
I have built the T4 and the wings are also Chromed. All the photos show that the wingson the actual car were pretty much chromed as well. They don't look like "polished aluminum" and since the industry standard for models is chromed...
The only alternative I can think of is to use very thin aluminum such as the inside of a soda or beer can applied over the wing after stripping the chrome. I suppose it can be done and since it is 1/12th, it is manageable. I don't know of anyone who make that thin gauge of aluminum.
Let me know how it turns out!

Hi guys, there is another way and thats to spray then with a dull coat or flat clear. I Have the t2 and will do one of those to get close to polished aluminum. Just spray over the chrome. Test on some scrap and you’ll see what I mean.

If it doesn't work I can always spray them aluminum. The real car had both front and back wings just polished back when they were racing, but the one on display back in Modena is shinier. I think they clear coated it for appearance, or preservation. Actually, the whole car has more gloss to it than they ever had back in the day.

I think I might try Bare-Metal Foil I NEVER have good luck with BMF! I have tried and tried and tried. For small stuff, I am really enamoured of the Molotow Chrome Pens. I have them in 1mm, 2mm, and 4mm widths. They really do a great job! I hope Molotow comes out with a gold and/or brass finish set soon!

The chassis is done. The wings I painted with Tamiya Gloss Aluminum and then a semi-gloss clear coat.

What did you use to strip the chrome? I'm thinking I like it much better with the aluminum look.

Also did they run with chrome back then or aluminum? I believe it was highly polished aluminum

Also did they run with chrome back then or aluminum? The actual cars were polished aluminum. The ones in the museum in Maranello I think have a clear coat of some sort, But they definately were never chromed. The only chrome I ever saw on a race car were the wheels, and that was rare. Or maybe the exhaust pipes.
The problem with "restored" cars, as Chris pointed out in another thread, is that they are a bit like us - they go with whatever works. There's a guy in my area who has a Watson roadster. Beautiful car, immaculate. But the frame and some of the suspension is powder coated. Looks nice but I don't think they had powder coating back in 1960.
