Have any of you ever built any of these Protar kits? I mean are they any good, they seem to be a bit pricey I was wondering are they worth it before I bite the bullit on one?
Thx
Paul

The Protar kits can be hit or miss. It would depend on which kit you are interested in.

Ferrari 126 C2
If I get it I was considering asking that nice gentleman over at Indycals if he could print a decal set that said Patrick Tambay.

I'm no expert on F1 models (or anything else for that mater ) so I will leave it to others to comment.

Arcticwolf, as far as Michael from Indycals reprinting a kit manufacture's decal sheet, every time I've asked that question, he didn't reply. So I take that to mean he can't due to copy write laws. For custom work, you will need to send in all the required artwork, and from what I've seen of his custom decal pricing, it's rather expensive.
There are several F! modeling sites where this type of information about decals is a common place issue. I've always gone by the assumption that if I have an issue, so do others, and then start googling it. More then not, I've found an answer and or solution.

Joel Micheal does make a decal sheet for the car, 1/20th or 1/12, but it comes with a choice of Villeneuve or Pironi. Which seems rather odd considering Tambay did as much or more with the car than either of them. I already have Villeneuve on a couple of cars, and I wouldn't give Pironi shelf space, so Tambay is the logical option. Maybe I should learn to print them myself, lol. Tambay was a much better driver than people give him credit for, two Can-Am titles and a shot at the F1 World title in '83 - another victim of Ferrari politics.

ArcticWolf, So all you need is Tombay's name? I'm sure that some of the guys here can help you through the process to print them yourself. Joel

Printing them yourself is fairly simple...sort of. The hard part is his name is in white and your average home printer doesn't print white. White decal paper is available but you would have to print red around the letters to match the color of the car, which is not easy to do either. Printing a thin red line around each letter is doable but you would have to cut and apply each letter individually....have fun with that! If you can find someone with an ALPS printer, they could do it but who knows what it would cost.... Another possibility is dry transfer lettering, if you can find the right font in the right size.... So, you could get them made for you but at what price? Hard to say. Or, you could do another Villeneuve car...or bite the bullet and welcome Pironi to your shelf.

I thought about the dry transfer lettering. I have hundreds of sheets of letraset left from the days when I did my drawings by hand - before autocad took over? Problem is they're all black + they're 25 yrs old. I might try some experiments to see what effect clear coat has on them just for fun. If it works I can try to find a white sheet.
But it's all academic now, the kit was an auction and I won't be getting it - too high for my tastes. Besides I just bought a T4 so that blows my budget for a while.
cheers
Paul
(oh, and no, Pironi is not going on the shelf )

For future reference, Woodland Scenics has a lot of different sizes and fonts of dry transfer letters. You can also use them as masks if you need a different color. Just apply the desired color, apply the letters, spray a light coat of your top color, and then use a toothpick to gently scrape the transfers off.
