Well, here's another project...a slot body currently available on Evilbay. I was able to get a Tamiya body 20 years ago from Polk's Hobby (in NYC?), but never did the work. When it was re-released again I bought one from Japan. The only big problem was putting a 1/8" spacer in the nose section. Of course the nose air intake isn't correct either, but I was going to finish the car as a Shelby American phantom CanAm entry anyway... this is the car as shown...
this is the car in un-restored condition...
I started by cutting out the cockpit area, leaving enough to mount the windscreen...
adding the spacer in the nose was next using an evergreen strip...
the slot car wheel inserts were very nice so I sandwiched them in between some wheel rims, having the rears a bit deeper...
I chose to use a chassis of Italian design, so I used a junker Lamborghini Contach...
I know that the De Tomaso used a spine-type chassis similar to a Lotus 30 and made up the chassis using sheet plastic...
I was going to use a Gurney Weslake Ford, but this car wouldn't have had that type and so a HP 289 Ford with Webers was substituted eventually, it looked good tho...
things fit pretty well and I replaced the discs with the spares box ...
I sprayed the chassis with a dull silver and picked some cushy seats, added the radiator ducting and dash...
I puttied the rear intakes and the wing areas...
I re-fitted the IMC 289 (a bit undersized) and spliced an AMT Indy Hewland onto it adding a bell housing spacer...
I sprayed an automotive lacquer similar to a Shelby color, added some decals from an Arii Ford GT40 (they are too thin and need a second set to cover properly...any one have an extra set??)...
I still haven't added the wing at this stage or the steering wheel, but you get the idea!
