When I was about 8 years old Dean came to my Dad's shop a lot and the about 10 or years ago we became fiends again speaking on the phone every so often, the last time I knew he was having health problems. His shop is just minutes from my home. Dean was best known for lettering the "Lil Bastard" James Dean Porsche 550 , he built the Monkeemobile and the Mantaray and for years went to Indy every May and lettered the Roadster including many winners like A. J. Foyt's 1964 winner. At the age of 83 he has a long and glorious career. He passed this morning, I am truly saddened and will miss our talks... Chris R.I.P.

So sorry to hear this news.
Didn't he also have a Ford GT40 roadster (the only one?) that Ford gave him for a dollar or something like that? I seem to remember that he recently restored it and refused big money for it. I pass his shop on Cahuenga regularly.

Yes, he had one of ? factory built roadsters.. last time I saw it he drove it right past me at Woodley Park on Ford/Mustang Day, it was pre -resto and was in Gulf colors, I think he went back to the original white with blue stripes as it was originally shipped to him in.. but Yes they sold it to him for a dollar!!! He also has several of AJ Foyts Indy cars in the shop for restoration last time I was there. Chris
