Hello guys, last time I posted a photo was May 15, then some private things came up.....finally a bicycle crash in July had me bed ridden for a long time. Broken ribs and a busted up knee in mid-summer really stinks.
New project now. A 1:16 Top Fuel cackle car, Roger Lee's own car. The build is wonderfully documented, I have the plans, nothing left to guess about.
This will be an absolute scale endeavor, brass chassis, laced wire wheels up front, some motor parts in cast nickel, not sure about the rear wheels yet. For a 1:25 modeler, this new scale will prove challenging.
Here an Excel draw out of the exact scale chassis, just a few things need to be cleared up. The crossed diagonals, and a tube size shows a few discrepancies. This will be solved in time.
The wheelbase will be 175". A long rail job. I like it.

Hi Mike,
Broken ribs and a busted up knee are no fun in any season! Hope you get well soon! This new project will be a blast. I'll be following.
Thanks,

Thanks Ismael! This has been a summer to forget, worst couple of months since I can remember.
Thanks for looking. I had a couple of conversations with Roger Lee, a few small areas have been cleaned up, this project is ready to go forward.
Bench is clean too!
Great to have you aboard.

Hi Mike, Good to have You back, sorry you went through hell to get here but now you should have plenty of Model building time...LoL ! So far I really like your sketch and plans, should you need any parts I have a small inventory of 1/16 stuff inc. Resin engines and chassis parts, some Paul Rowe and Andersen? resin/cast stuff etc. not sure I have much for your project but Ya never know. Ask and I will look. Feel better.. Chris

Hi Chris! Great that you dropped by, I'll write here that the sidewinder project has been packed away, actually the only project I've ever abandoned. I've completely lost incentive, even all parts are there, just put on ice.
Now with my first 1:16 build, I'll have to admit, I don't even have a motor or rear axle housing, slicks and rear wheels either. I've reserved a 1:16 kit from a fellow, but he writes to please stand by, family issues and job.....well, we've all been there and done that.
I can get a resin motor, an axle housing and decent slicks are a problem. Roger Lee tells me, I need slicks that are 32" tall and 12,5" wide. Makes for 50mm tall and 20mm wide. I can get the 5 slot Halibrands as an aftermarket deal too. An Olds rear end housing would be OK, his car has an 8 3/4" Chrysler, so I haven't a clue of a kit that has that one. I may have to just fabricate one.
So bottom line, slicks and a rear end housing would be sensational.
Thanks for the offer....Mike..

The first part of the chassis completed. For a 1:25 builder, the model is just huge. Nothing to compare, just sticking to the plans.
Roll bar is next, will have somewhat thicker material.
Thanks for looking, Mike..

Beautiful work! I need to get back at brass soldering. It's been years but my soldering iron died a while ago.

Mike, Just found your build thread as I rarely get down to these forums. 1st off, hope that every day you're feeling better then the day before.
Sounds and looks like an amazing project, so I'll be tagging along following your updates as they get posted.

Thanks fellows!
@ismael, very sorry to hear of the passing of your trusty soldering iron. Maybe the salty air and sunny weather was too much for the hot thing? I tell you what though, attaching the roll bar and especially the helmet strap got me several little blisters! Ouch!
@ben, thanks for dropping by and commenting. Much appreciated, glad you like it.
@joel, thanks for visiting. Other than a (still) sore knee things are back to normal, health wise. I'm excited about this project and already it's proven to be therapeutical....it's just time to get back to normal things again.

UPDATE: Roll bar and push bar finished.
The project is starting to look like a dragster now the roll bar and push bar have been attached. A few blisters later, the helmet strap has been adjusted as well as the push bar. The front chassis section hasn't been finally attached yet. The unit slides in and out as needed. Better to have some room to work, much easier when separated.
Here Roger Lee's real car during the rejuvenation in 2007. The roll bar was difficult, and had to be corrected on my build;
Next up are the various tabs and studs for suspension and cockpit gadgets.

Mike, Absolutely great metal fabrication. Your soldering looks super smooth even in those enlarged pics. In actual scale all of the joints must look super smooth. Needless to say I'm super impressed.

@joel, well I really appreciate that you notice the joints. It takes a lot of time looking through the magnifying lens to get the soldered joints shaped and smoothed out. After working with brass for a while, I placed value on every single step of the build process to be photographed. The pics are brutal and everything can be seen, the good and the areas that need attention. Still, all through the build right up until painting this is an ongoing process. Thanks for mentioning and commenting.
@ben, much appreciated. I'm grateful you drop by and comment, glad you like the progress.
Working with the tabs now for the radius rods, and back to the cockpit for the clutch and go-pedal, along with the 3rd member triangulation bars. Just lots of needful, small things that get kind of testy.

Hi Mike, I didnt know if you got my PM I sent but I recently ordered some Stainless thin wall tubing in .022 .032 & .042 from Future Attractions its very nice only 3inch lengths though, got it fast and I know I will be making suspension, throttle linkage and interior parts with it. here is the link www.futurattraction.com/15.html about 1/2 down the page. Another excellent vendor to use. Your solder work is excellent, I learned making slot car chassis in my Dad's slot car shop.. Chris
