Just heard that Oscar Koveleski has died. For you youngens, Oscar used to race in the SCCA and Can-Am in the '60s & '70s.. He is best known to us modelers as the owner of the Auto World mail order shop. The AW catalog was the "bible" of model car building and racing. I actually got to visit the AW store in Pennsylvania twice, both times coming back from the sporst car races at Watkins Glen.
He was also one of the founders of the Polish Racing Drivers Association. To join the PRDA, you had to meet one of 4 criteria:
Be Polish and a racing driver. Be Polish and not a racing driver. Be a racing driver but not Polish. Be neither Polish nor a racing driver. We'll miss you Oscar speedsport.com/sports-cars/other-sports-cars/sports-car-racer-oscar-koveleski-88/

The Can-Am class clown! I was also able to visit the Scranton home-base of Auto World a few times, but mostly I just ordered from the catalog, probably close to a hundred times growing up. RIP Oscar!

Growing up in a small town with no hobby shop within an hours drive the AW catalog was my life line to models and slot cars. Thank you Oscar!

With the AutoWorld catalog it opened up a whole new world to almost every boy (and maybe a few girls) in the 1970’s that was into building model cars. I did not know about or subscribe to the various Model car or real car magazines back then (I got my drivers license in 1974) but the AW catalogue and the annual AMT contests at the World of Wheels car shows were so cool as you got to see real and show cars that were just like the model cars being built. Thanks Oscar for a great ride.
