Hi there,
I've been lurking here for the last few months so I thought I ought to join properly, my name is Dave and I live in Cornwall England (the pointy toe at the bottom left on the map for all you furriners out there!).
I work in civil aviation but my early car life was spent mending and modifying a series of British rot boxes, trying to keep them road legal!
I've been modelling for the last fifty odd years but have only returned to cars in the last 3-4 years, previous to that I was primarily an aircraft modeller but I've dabbled in all genres over years. Now that I'm approaching my retirement I decided to clear the stash of aircraft and concentrate on a theme - which is models of cars I saw race from 1976 until 1983 when family matters took over (interrupted for 2 years when I helped run a VW Golf II Gti Production saloon racer with a business partner). This theme has expanded a bit to include some out of era cars but I must have seen the drivers "in period", so for example I've got a MKII GT40 kit which will be finished as P1031, Andretti's ride from Le Mans 1966, as I saw Mario drive for Lotus in the Lotus 77, 78 & 79. My Lotus 78 is earmarked for Gunnar Nilssons car.
I'm okay at the building and painting of the oily bits
but I'm still struggling with getting a good finish to the bodywork, I have an airbrush set up but hate using it (believe me I've trid) so I'm learning to use Tamiya spray cans, the learning curve is still going up.....
I concentrate on 1/12 scale so the Tamiya F1 kits are the go to, I'm sorely tempted by MFH but I really cannot justify the expense, although I know I will get a good bang for my buck! I've been lucky with buys on eBay in the last couple of years before Covid struck sending prices skywards so my stash is pretty comprehensive and I'm not averse to stripping glue bombs to turn in a good result. In fact that's what I'm doing at the moment with an old Bandai BMW E9 CSL Batmobile and making a 1976 Group 5 works car which I saw race at Silverstone in the first 6 hours race there, it will be the green Gosser Bier car driven by Dieter Quester and Harold Krebs.
I bought the model from a nice man in Sicily of all places, lots of manky superglue used, stripped it and am now modifying it from the 1975 IMSA spec to full works Group 5 standard.
I'll post up some more pictures over the next few days and look forward to contributing to the community.
