The only reason I ever watch the Daytona 500 is because it helps to fill the winter non-racing void. But once again, and as always, the Daytona 500 proved just how boring and dangerous Restrictor plate racing is on Super Speedways.
The race was as always due to restrictor plates nothing but one series after another series of conga lines with no real racing, almost no passing, and two "Big Ones" with the last one on the last lap that should have made Joey Lagano (Team Penske) the winner as he led the last 20 laps. But his own teammate Brad Keselowski who was tucked in right behind him in 2nd place made the traditional Hail Mary gotta try to pass move, and got so close to Lagano's rear bumper that he just tapped him, and the rest is history.
Literally every restrictor race is pure crap non-racing, boring conga lines with the tv announcers trying to come up with every story line to put some interest into one of the main reasons why Nascar is loosing market share be it fan base, tv ratings, or even sponsors. My view is simple: let 'em RACE or get rid of the super speedways. More HP is still safer then what the restrictor plate racing always ends up being.
This isn't the 1st time that Brad Keselowski took out Lagano trying to pass for a win or finish higher up in the standings. Either Penske finally does something about it or Lagano should. I'm both a Penske fan with the exception of Brad Keselowski, and a Chad Elliot fan ( I loved his father "Wild Bill" Elliot), and he's just might be even better as an overall racer.
Nascar expanded their road course races to 7 this year as it's pure racing in every sense of the word, and road racing fans do watch those races. I'm looking forward to everyone of them. This coming Sunday their running the Daytona road course which will be a way better race in every sense of the word, and you can see the entire course from the stands. Sure wish I could make the trip from LI NY to Daytona, but the head of Finance would kill me for sure.
