This F5000 is coming right along. As far as the decal thing goes...I do my own also. But like you Paul...I've got to use windows 7 as the ALPS MD-5000 won't work on windows 10. So I've got two towers and two screens on my table....and two Printers! Man...it gets crazy going between the two sometimes.

Thanks. A quick update. Engine installed, trans bolted in, some interior done.

I bought a new Dell with Windows 10, nothing I had would run on it, absolutely hated the OS, so I wiped it clean and gave it to my Grand daughter for her birthday. All the new stuff seems to be games and more games oriented - I don't play games - but she loves it!
I went back to my old Dell, which is twice the computer anyway, partitioned the hard drive to run Windows 7 and also Windows NT, plus a common file storage so I could access from either system. Now the programs run on the OS they were designed for in the first place. You have to re-boot to switch but it works fairly well. I gave up on the two screen bit a while ago, now I just have one bigger one.
There's a limit to how far I want to go with this stuff, isn't there? I hope!
Cheers mate
Paul

Paul, Your progress is simply amazing. One would find it pretty hard to believe that this build isn't a commercial kit, it's that good.

Thanks.
Well, it's got wheels on it. The suspension is whatever was in my parts boxes, plus a lot of styrene tubing and some aluminum rod. My own design based on what I had or could make, also working around some broken pieces. I have no idea what kits they are from (none that I know of). Wheels and tires were already assembled to the hubs - that made life a whole hell of a lot of fun - supposedly from a Ferrari but I know the wheels at least are Honda but the hubs are not. Whatever, I think it worked out.
Does anyone know, did Tamiya make more than one Honda 273 kit? These parts are similar to my Honda - which matches the Honda instruction sheets - but the connections are all backwards, pins where there should be eyelets, etc? It's as if somebody made a different kit of the same car?
Anyway, after breaking the plastic ones twice, I gave up and made the radius rods out of aluminum:
Front end is simple. It's from a Lotus. Mostly. No need to get fancy on the rack as it will be obscured by the water tank:
And I move on.

Just a note to chime in and say your not posting for just one or two and shame on me for not speaking up sooner. This is spectacular modeling, not only because there's so much scratch building and modifying involved, but because the results are so crisp and believable. Bravo!

Although I came here to see what others were doing, get inspiration and borrow ideas rather than seek praise for my own work, it is nice when some one does leave a compliment. Or even a "like".
It is much easier - for me at least - to do this in 1/12th, I just can't work that well in the smaller scales. The down side is there isn't very much on the market to work with, so I tend to have to "make it myself", but hey, that's part of the fun.
Thanks again.

I think I have the interior pretty much complete. It's basic anyway, not much to one of these things.

Paul, Just amazing scratch building from the ground up. the rear end assembly looks like one would expect it to. the front end is certainly good enough as most of it will be covered by the nose clip.
Looking forward to your next update as your making great progress for sure.

Actually Joel, I have other plans for the nose. The rack turns out I mounted too high - the tie rods interfere with the nose bodywork. So I removed it.
This is the car I'm basing things on:
Some mods to do but overall that's the basis.
Scratch built water tank to be matched up to the radiator:
The nose was modified to fit the rad, so to make this work I fitted the rad into the nose, had to make a spacer plate, then CA'd the water tank to the car with the nose in place. When it set I removed the nose, and voila:
More of the rack will show than I thought, so I'll build a new one.
The nose does fit, not perfect but fairly well, and it's removable:
Since I don't have any exhaust headers yet I might as well finish the front end.
Cheers guys.

Paul, Love what you've accomplished with the front end so far. The radiator and water tank looks like they were molded as one unit as the fit is that good.
You're making great progress vs my snail's pace just decaling the main body shell just puts me to shame. But I'm almost done with it at this point.

The photo with the checkered paint is interesting because, the tank, which actually looks like a fuel tank to me, it has a notch cut out where the Rack and pinion should go through but for some reason the Rack has been flipped upside down and raised, note the big aluminum blocks that space it upward to mount on the chassis. The Rack ends appear like they were originally on the bottom of the spindle mounts but now on top.. Interesting stuff either way. I have a 1/16 Lotus 49 that might make a great faux F5000 car, using a small block out of the 55 Corvette kit and a bit of scratchbuilding too. Only thing I have not found in my stash is a trans axel but like I did on the Ford Gt40 1/16 project I can make one.. I will have to give this bit more thought.. Chris

Chris The Gerhardts did have some novel ideas. The 68 went to outboard front springs and double wishbones, I almost converted to that - wish I had in retrospect. The 69/70 was a Lotus turbine clone but with a normal motor - if you could call running a Plymouth engine in an indycar normal. Good cars though and a good subject matter for this project. Here's another shot of the front end:
Speaking of Lotus, Bill Brack bought both Lotus 42 indycars, had them shipped to Toronto, and built the Chevy powered Lotus GTX for the Canadian Championship series:
I already have the decal sheet printed up, a Tamiya 49 kit and another engine ready so I can build this baby in 1/12th.
