I've never been particularly interested in the third-gen Supra, but this is another one of those subjects where the livery makes the car interesting. Can't beat a Castrol livery! The build's going pretty fast, this is the first chance I've had to take any pics or start a build thread. It's another Tamiya putting-together-LEGOS kit. Everything is white, with just a few detail colors. I've done some more detail painting and touchup work since I took the picture. I should be ready to start decals this weekend. I'm going to have to cross my fingers and use the kit decals, because the Shunko decal sheet is long out of production and impossible to find. Ben

I had this kit and ended up selling it. I do like both the car and the livery however.

Cool! A wireless drivevshaft! The drive shaft was on the paint rack, drying. That's the only not-well-engineered part of the kit. It has part of the drive shaft molded with the differential. Of course, they don't line up well, so there's a kink in the drive shaft. And of course, I didn't see the paint instructions to paint the bit on the differential yellow, so it looks weird with half yellow and half silver. I'll probably just paint it all black and be done with it, since it will never be seen once the model is finished, although I'm thinking of removing the safety bracket from the drive shaft part and making a new drive shaft with styrene rod. The decision will be based on how lazy I'm feeling next time I work on it. Ben

Got the decals on the body. They worked pretty well for kit decals. They were a little brittle and cracked when they were settling down in some of the deeper crevasses in front of the rear wheels. Tamiya Park Green is a perfect match for the green decals, but I'll have to mix some red for touchups. MCW's Castrol Red is too dark for the decals. Once that's done, the body will be ready for a clear coat. I just have to add the decals for the wheels and tires. The chassis/cockpit will be ready to finish once I decide how I'm going to do the seat belts. I found another use for that Hasegawa adhesive-backed Mylar: use strips of it to make hold down bands for fire bottles. Ben

Ben, Great job on the decaling. they look darn near perfect to me. The older Tamiya decals are a real bear to work with.

I'll post some pics later, but I was only semi-successful at matching the paint. It still came out too dark, but I had to stop before I really messed something up. On a better note, I got the backwards decals on the tires without incident. I didn't even have to use any of the spares! I just have to clear coat the body and tires, paint some window trim, and then put it all together. Ben

Great job so far, especially on those ancient Tamiya decals. Well done, can't wait to see it finished.

Thanks, Shawn! I just finished spraying the clear gloss on the body and flat on the tires. Of course, the fan sucked some dust onto the body, so I'm going to have to see if I can polish it away. I'm really impressed with these Mr Color GX series paints. They're high gloss and almost as self-leveling as Future. They only have a limited number of colors right now. It's going to be my go-to gloss white and black, once I run through the last of my Tamiya rattle cans. Here's how everything looked before I wiped the decal goo off prior to spraying. I'll post more pics after I've attempted to polish out the flaws. Ben

Ben, I'd say that the body and the tires came out looking pretty darn good.
I've heard of the Mr. Color GX line, but haven't seen them in the USA. Aren't they enamel based?

Ben, Just how did you add those nuts on the wheels? Each one looks absolutely perfect.

Thanks, guys! Joel, I used a fine tip Sharpie and carefully touched each wheel nut. It's an old trick I've used for years on airplane wheels. I slipped in a couple of spots and just gently scraped the ink off with a knife. Quick update: Zero Design's window masks were an epic failure. They're made of some kind of vinyl, instead of the Tamiya tape-style you get with a lot of Japanese kits or other mask makers. The adhesive is strong, making the masks difficult to remove, and the adhesive comes off of the vinyl and stays stuck to the clear part. It's slowly coming off with lots of alcohol and scrubbing, but I'm also removing the paint in the process. I had bought several other sets from Hiroboy for future projects. I'll be using them as templates to cut masks from Tamiya tape. Ben
