Last week I painted a model using Mr. Color Metallic Green thinned 50/50 with Mr Color Leveling Thinner was loved how the paint went on. So today, I go to clear coat it with Mr. Color GX100 Super Clear thinned in the same manor and the paint instantly frosts over, ruining the paint on the model. Luckiy its a white metal kit so I can strip and start over, but I'm not happy about it. (Especially since I will have to find and reputty all the body imperfections again when the paint stripper removes that, also.)
What went wrong? Too much thinner? Too high pressure (I wouldn't think so at 15 PSI)? I have never had any clear gloss do this before. Clear flat yes, not clear gloss.

This is the fool proof (10+ years of use by several people without fail) formula to use to thin Mr Color (aka Gunze Sango Mr Color Lacquers):
Color: 3 drops Mr. Leveling Thinner: 12 drops GX100: 2 drops Mr Mild Retarder: 2 drops
18lbs pressure
Clean needle every 30 seconds
Side note: "Frosting" is normally caused by very high humidity and/or water condensation inside of the air supply. I assume you have a moisture trap on your air supply or use CO2 tank. If not, this could be the cause.

I do have a moisture trap and shoot indoors with A/C.

Update. Thinking I did something wrong/different, I decided to try again. When I first started spraying a light coat, I again got frosting, but then I decided to lay it on heavy. That solved the problem. Frosting vanished and clear coat went on as expected. I'll remember that for next time.

Mark, Wow is that super thin. I've used Mr. Color C46 for years as my go to gloss. I've always thinned it with Mr Leveler 400 that already has retarder in it. I thin it 1:1 with the final coats approx thinned 2:3. .5mm Grex AB setup shot @ 18 psi give or take a few psi one way or the other as these gauges are pretty small to read accurately. And like Mike my house has Central AC and I use a humidifier in the winter months as the dryness at my age causes my fingers to crack all the time.

I agree it's super thin. So much so for my XJR-8 build I mixed up the thinner and the clear! I couldn't understand why when I went to shoot the thinner thru the airbrush to clean it out, there was such a big mess. Didn't help the finish of the model either. Now both jars are clearly marked.
