Since I still can't decide which car to build, I thought I'd start on a project I've been wanting to do for years. Once upon a time, Squadron had the Academy Hughes 500D police helicopter on sale for 5 bucks. I bought two, along with a couple of Quickboost's cheap OH-6A Cayuse conversions. They won't get you all the way to the military OH-6A, which had a lot of differences from the civil 500C, but it does provide the early tail surfaces and four-blade rotor head to build a 500C. Here's what the kit looks like out of the box (not my model Source): The fit of the clear parts sucks. I'm going to have to go back and redo the windscreens after I paint the models. The hardest part of the build has been modifying the skids. Academy supposedly provided the high skids that I need, but got them too short in length and height, so out comes the brass tube and styrene rod. The two choppers I'm modeling also had the aerodynamic fairings removed from the struts, so the brass tube is very helpful there. It will be interesting to see if I can manage to get all of the skid parts lined up straight! Here's what I'm building. I just need a Stearman to go with them! Ben

Cool! One of my favorite helos! I was jealous of Magnum, not only for the Ferrari but for the Hughes 500 Will follow closely. That scene is so wrong at so many levels it is cool Hughes 500: The bad guys favorite helo on TV and movies! Thanks, Ismael

Done! Ready to go hunting for escaped astronauts. I may put them on top of my display case with a little astronaut figure hanging over the ledge. Ben

Hi Ben,
Both turned out great! That was a popular "bad guys" helo in TV and movies back then. Nice conversion work!
Thanks, Ismael

Thanks! Another fun one would be the Hughes 500D from Blue Thunder, with the huge cannons mounted on the sides.
