Hi Everyone,
If you haven't noticed lately, I spend a lot of time with my grandsons. I would like to teach them how to spray paint with both air brush and rattle cans. However, one of the drawbacks to teaching them is that I haven't been able to find a good respirator that's fits them. I have been looking high and low for a good respirator for my grandsons. They are 6 and 8 years old and anxious to learn how to do this! What's sad is that I do most of the painting and then they put the models together with my help. So, really they are doing very minimal work. You would think that something would be readily available, especially in the hobby field! If anyone can recommend something that I could use, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Johnny,
I will keep this in mind. I was hoping for something a little less expensive and a little less scary for little ones. I don't know if my 6 year old would put it on, but I will keep this in mind, it might be the only game in town!

Hi Jim, That is so cool! My kids made a few snappers back in the day but never caught up. Who knows if I have better luck with grandkids whenever they come The Mira systems could be an alternative but can be expensive. They are designed to protect children from chemical attacks and stuff. I'm thinking the best alternative for children would be a PAPR (Powered Air Purifying Respirators) like the ones used for media blasting. I don't know if they come in smaller sizes. Thanks, Ismael

Again I will keep this in mind. It just behooves me that there is nothing for our kids in the Hobby Market for this! How are we going to get kids and keep them interested in the hobby, when they can't even do the basics of painting? I use a medium size 3M half respirator when I paint. When I put it on my grandsons, it was huge on them. I'm afraid a small may also be to big, but I am going to order a small and give it a try, if it fits then I'll buy another one. I appreciate you guys trying to help out.

Best of luck! Let us know what you find. I truly applaud your interest in safety. If we teach them early, they will get it for life. Thinking out of the box, how about starting airbrushing acrylics thinned with distilled water? And show them if they behave, get good grades and eat all their food they can eventually graduate to more complex and exciting things! I know it's a different scenario, but in Boy Scouts we are careful about the age of the kids for certain activities. Not only in the sense of maturity or danger, but also, if we let a 12 year old kid do everything (trust me, some of them would jump from moving helicopter into a wildfire with a toy water gun if allowed), they will get no motivation to stay up to 18.
Thanks, Ismael

Hello,
I don't think virus filters are effective against paint fumes. Keep in mind viruses are actual particles and can be "easily" stopped by something like a N95 face mask. Paint fumes are chemical molecules going all over the place and require some sort of neutralization like active charcoal canister etc. Two very different requirements of filtering protection.
Thanks, Ismael

Thanks again guys. Mike, Ismael is right. I did check into the Flo-mask and it is not intended for painting and I want to be sure these guys are safe. They are excited about doing their own kits! It's nice to see them into it and they are very competent for their age. As a matter of fact the younger one is quite knowledgeable about vintage cars and hot rods! The older one is a hands on type of guy and very particular about what he does. I think they would catch on quite quick once given the chance.

You are on the right track Jim- the lessons learned when young stand for a lifetime- doing things the right way, safety isn’t a state of mind, it’s common sense.

Hi All,
Thanks so much in helping me in the search for a respirator for my grandsons. I was able to find a good mask. I found a 3M mask in size small! I have never been able to find one at Home Depot, Lowes or any other store that would carry them in that size. The smallest I could find was a medium, which was too big. Even my search on line I could not find anyone that offered a small, they were all adult sizes. However, through the help of many of you I was finally able to find a mask that fits snug and offered a good seal for my grandsons! I got the masks the day before yesterday and had a great time trying them on after school yesterday. They were not intimidated by them and are anxious to start learning how to spray paint! Here’s to some Happy Modeling in the future! If any of you need the information, let me know.
