I actually did build something
Wanting the GT40 to go with the other Comstock cars, I settled on the Fujimi kit. Not 100% accurate body but as close as I can find (short of 2 IMC kits cloned together, and I've had enough IMC to last forever). I'm normally a Fujimi fan, so I figured although it's a curbside I can always make it full detail, right? And I had what I thought was a resin engine conversion kit for it. Wrong, I had a very nice SBF with Webers, probably for a Cobra. So of course I went ahead anyway. The Ford, as delivered
After some surgery, I had this
It'll do.

Probably should have stopped there. The Fujimi kit is a piece of junk. Curbside, sure but they could have at least made what little they give you accurate. So some scratch building to give the engine bay at least a semblance of a Ford GT.
Instructions and order of assembly out the window, I'm winging it - no choice. The front won't be seen so it can stay wrong.
Some cleanup and some paint, passable?
Fast forward. Engine in, cooling hoses, fuel lines, missing parts scrounged from scrap IMC kit including the exhausts which surprisingly fit quite well

More or less complete chassis. The axle is just a steel rod, the suspension doesn't line up with the tranny or the car, but you won't see it (I hope)
Yes the inner door panels were white originally on this car
I cobbled up some bits to make the axles look a bit more realistic, styrene tube for the missing trailing links, coolers from the IMC. Ready for bodywork.

This was the first "production" GT40 built. Comstock was effectively the factory Ford Canada team and with their association with Shelby, they were guaranteed car no 1. It was the car raced mostly by Weitzes, and the model is representative of it as raced at Mosport, Westwood etc. It also raced at Sebring but was withdrawn after the awful tragedy that befell it's sister entry in which Bob McLean was killed. Decals printed by me on my wife's printer (mine died again), not the best job, but I decided not to touch them up as a little battle damage kind of adds to it.
Plexiglass spoiler was a Comstock touch (made from covid face shield)
Rear grills from a splatter cover for a frying pan
They used duct tape for the light lenses (it's a decal)
I'm not real happy with how it turned out, but it could have been worse.
cheers
Paul

I don’t know Paul. Looks pretty good from here. Especially with what you had to start with. Nice work.

Good Job on the conversion, Fujimi actually did make a full detail MK-i I remember it was Red on the box. I bought one for the Mk-I engine cover to add to a MK -II chassis and front clip for the Alan Mann AMR01/02 Car I was doing.. This real nice and looks SWEEET.. cHRIS ps. The MPC hardcastle and McCormick kit is actually a Ford GT MK_II with a messed up body. just in case you want another full detail GT 40..

I never once considered trying to put an engine in mine. You are braver than me and I even had(have) a KA super detail set which should have made it easy. The late George King (Canada) made me a very nice set of decals and all in all I like mine. Steve

paul, Don't sell your massive conversion short. You did one heck of a job on it. Looks more then darn good if you ask me.
And here I am thinking of building the two Fujimi GT40's I have in my stash. Curbside of course as my skill level is no where close to yours.

Paul & Kyle, I've started on the Meng kit and it looks great. Only issues are the super soft recessed panel and door lines. I tried to re-scribe one door, but my eyesite is so poor these days, it was a no go. So they're staying the way they are. Also ordering decals from Indy Cal as a few reviews said that they were thick and difficult to work with.
I've also got the old Fujimi GT40 MkI which is basically a curbside kit, and I really want to do it in the Gulf Wyler colors later this year.

Haven’t decided what car I want to do my Meng as. I love the gold on the Holman and Moody 3rd place car so may build that. Looking forward to seeing yours.

The Indycals set has the fern decal which is missing from the Meng sheet. Other than that I had no trouble with the kit decals that I remember.

Paul, Indy Cal decal sheets including the tire decals on the way. Getting read to prime the pan in Mr Surfacer 1500 Black, while the front and rear body sections will be primed in Tamiya Gray. Once done I'll start my build thread as there's not much to post at the present time.

Looks great to me and nice to see not a typical livery. I had to laugh about your comment about IMC kits.
