No, I'm not joking. I had an old MPC glue bomb and decided to do a quick just for fun makeover. Yeah, right. That was a year ago. So after a de-glue and 48hr soak in super clean, I had this:
It wasn't much of a kit to start with, even less now. The body wasn't too bad, just a little warped. Then I got the bright idea that since I have enough works McLarens, build a unique one. So I ordered this little gem from Texas 3D Customs:
Charles is a great guy, he doesn't offer his stuff in 1/20th, but if you ask nicely he'll print them any size you want. They should all do that. Now lets see if I can make this work.

I got the reassembly this far before I decided on the SOHC
Of course I got distracted by the motor. I surgically separated the bell housings from the trannys and came up with Ford bell housing mated to Hewland transaxle. Plus some paint:

Fast forward. More repairs and reassembly, and some paint. The length of the engine required relocating the front mounting plate a bit further forward in the chassis, no big deal.
more to come

More progress on the engine. The ignition wires were a whole lot of fun.
And into some scratch building. Since I wanted to build a better McLaren, changed the roll bar so it becomes an engine support and new oil and water tanks.

The back mostly finished.
At that point I took a break.

That's an awesome conversion!! I have found most 3d printers and Decal makers will adjust the scale of an existing product for a conversion, If, like you say, Ask nicely and really use the product. In this case it will be a different version that You dont see every day despite the fact there was a lot of variations in the actual Can Am. Open Rules allowed for a anything goes time. Too Bad they have that now, it seems Technology just stalls out now days , everyone is running the same basic car, engine, chassis and tires.. Chris

Chris, I love 427 SOHCs and have a Monogram GT40 Spyder on a WIXX MKII diecast chassis that I have a 427 SOHC with AMT 58 mm sidedraft Webers mounted. I agree that the Texas 3Ds are great engines and at a good price. I have the 427 FE and the SOHC and am swapping the Webers and injectors on some Lola T70s I am doing. I am making the X-1 Riverside/Nassau "Big Ed" with a shorter nose, otherwise the same car. A blue McLaren (Andretti's 429er) would look good.

This is magnificent. I’m going to put my MPC McLaren away until I forget I’ve seen this. 🤣 Great work.

Thanks guys. Chris, I'd like to know who you deal with, most of the ones I meet have a take it or leave it attitude - mostly I leave it. It's a nice change when you get somebody like Charles, and yes his quality is superb.
The finished chassis, I took it outside for some pics but it doesn't really help that much. Added some detail and made some mods to the stock McLaren, nothing that any race shop couldn't have easily done. The body has minor fitment issues but the added flange on the sides of the fuel tanks disguises it quite well.

I thought natural light would show off the colour better, but it still looks black. It isn't, it's Tamiya TS64 Dark Mica Blue. Mixed and matched some of Michael's decals and Labatts sponsorship. If I ever find some decent mirrors I'll add them.
An indoor flash shot, kind of shows the actual colour:
Thanks for tuning in guys
cheers

Great result Paul! Love your livery and the engine. I just bought an Offy off of that guy and it is super nice. I’ll definitely be buying some more of his stuff. Anyways, nice job, as always!

Paul, From a glue bomb to a absolute Gem of a build. Well done my friend, very well done.
I just started the old Accurate Miniatures M8B, my all time favorite Can Am car by far. Sure hope it turns out looking half as good as your build.

I have had that kit twice over the years. You sure built it better than I ever could. Kudos to you sir. 👏
