This build was inspired by a fellow member of the open wheel forum building the Etzel version of this kit. I picked up a few of the ancient Aurora/Best kits a while ago but had never built one to date. While this certainly pales in comparison to his (I knew it would) seeing his is what made me want to crack into this. I absolutely love old kits and seeing where the hobby has come from. There is also some really cool subject matter out there. This build was no exception.
So here we have the original bad luck green car. Thanks to Gaston Chevrolet driving over Eddie O'Donnell later in the year at the Beverly Hills board track. I always loved the Monroes and Frontenacs and their unique radiator shrouds. I kept this mostly out of the box as I was pretty happy with Best's interpretation of the general shape of the Monroe. Of course they have those absolutely horrendous wheels and tires so that needed to be addressed. I picked up some from the aftermarket that I thought would be close enough. A quick cleanup and some paint and they were good to go. I used some generic gauges and cut styrene rings out to make bezels. At this point I have to thank fellow open wheel forum member James Harvey for bringing the detail master gauge rings to my attention. Next time I need gauges they'll look better thanks to Jim. Additionally I scratch built a hand pump for our resident mechanician Johnnie Bresnahan to operate and installed that into the cockpit. And I am no figure painter but I wanted the full 50s feel of this kit so I painted the Siamese twin figure they included to the best of my, admittedly limited ability, and installed them into the cockpit as well. Decals, of course, came from Michael at Indycals to finish the build off. It was really fun building this ancient kit and I can't wait to build the other couple I have. The Miller special looks partially crushed, but it needs some body work done for accuracy anyway and I also have the Gilmore special to do at some point. No real idea what I'm going to start on next.
