Started this about 2 years ago (or maybe more...) but had an issue with the decals so stuffed it back in the box and moved on. Finally decided to look for decals and of course, an arm and a leg will get you a set from the auction site. I decided to contact Borgfeldt, the Canadian dealer for Tamiya, not holding my breath but, they came through! A brand new decal sheet for $5.00! Then, $10.00 shipping...lol. So now, $15.00 but still, better than what's out there. Besides the price, I think the auction site ones were the original kit decals anyway, so I would have probably been no further ahead.
Here's a shot of the old decal sheet vs. the new one. I think they have improved their printing process just a bit.
Here is the completed beast...this thing is huge!
I don't know how many times I tried to do those wheels. First, I just painted the wheels black then tried hand painting the silver outlines. The shaky, fat fingers and dwindling eyesight make for tough times! Next, I tried painting the silver first, cleared it then semi-gloss black. After the black dried, I tried sanding/scraping very lightly to reveal the silver, hoping the clear would stop from scratching the silver...nope. Didn't work. Finally, found a little sponge, dipped it in silver paint and dabbed around to get the outline on the "spokes". Not perfect but as far as I was going to go.
The body color is DupliColor Automotive Touch-Up paint, Toyota Magnetic Gray Metallic. Nice paint but stinks like crazy. Make sure you have plenty of ventilation going on if you use this stuff!
No, the lens on the tach is not cracked. It's just a reflection.
I built the 1/12 version of this bike a few years ago. Comparing the two side by side....same Toyota paint but a few minor differences (red stripes, chrome exhaust, etc.)
