I have always admired the Marcos Mantis XP LM since I was a youngster, MPC made a kit called the "Scorpion" that is kinda similar, its 1/20 scale and would be a good base to build it. and I have one.. Hmmm another one on the project list.. Chris

Epically ugly, yet strangely attractive. I have doubts about how sound the aero package is either. But it just may have worked. I don't recall ever hearing of one having actually been raced in anger in the day. This appears to be at Goodwood in the modern era.
There was a slot car body of it back in the day. I don't remember which mfr made it, but it was typically squished, like most 1/24 slot car bodies of the late 60s-early 70s. So not much help.

The slot car body was a Russkit, produced by my dear friend Jim Russell. I raced that body quite a bit and always enjoyed the looks. The restored LM car was at Woodley Park in Van Nuys not too long ago. The XP did race at Spa in 1968 as a test run (result unknown) and was intended to run in June at Lemans that year but the race was canceled due to a french workers strike , it was run on Sept. 28 & 29. The car was sold to an unknown american entity in June only to re-appear in 2009 completely restored. Now it resides in the So Cal area... Chris

I keep forgetting to mention, the XP and several other Marcos cars are built on PLYWOOD chassis, common among several Foreign Auto manufacturers...

I remember seeing pics of it in R&T and C&D and the vacformed slot car bodies. Amazing how much it resembles some recent Lamborghinis.

Speaking of cars in the San Fernando Valley...This one, the Jack Nethercutt Mirage, was built and lived in Sylmar a mile from my home. I used to ride in the hills of Sylmar on my bike (what now is known as a "mountain bike") and the mechanics for the Mirage rode their motorcycles after work. I'd see them there much more often than at car races. Earlier wheels than in this photo were fabricated out of aluminum plate riveted together. Much like Centerline wheels later on. Like the Shelby King Cobra, this car made it out onto the race track when it's time had already passed. I remember it best painted a burgundy/maroon color and with regular doors instead of the one-piece window-doors. The Nethercutt's place in Sylmar, also known as the place where "Eclipse" trap shooting targets were made, later became renowned for its museum nicknamed "San Sylmar".
