The only explanations I could come up with for those hugely extra wide rear fenders at the time, were that: 1. Can Am racers were very rapidly going to wider and wider tires and perhaps that was allowed for a little over-exuberantly... Or maybe... 2. After having made the body wide enough for the hugely wide tires other Can Am racers were using, they found the car with its smaller engine was over-tired and they went with narrower tires.
Whichever it really was, it looked rather odd. But the car went pretty well.
