I picked it up at a show yesterday for $10. Kind of an impulse buy because I had never seen or heard of the kit before. The instructions are dated 1997, but the box art, instructions, and parts all indicate a much earlier vintage. It is a full detail kit and, aside from some skinny tires and really thick decals, it looks like it might be decent representation of an early GT40.

I believe it may be a reissue of the old Aurora GT40.

I too have one of those kits in the same Revell/Monogram boxing. The history section of the instruction sheet was written before 1965 and the back page has a listing of other kits for sale, all of which were offered by Aurora in the early 60s. Most of those were never rekitted by Revell/Monogram.

I too have one of these. I haven't built it, but I plan to have it on my shelf some day. In the 60s, I passed over this kit with the Aurora labeling, because I seriously disliked other Aurora kits I had. It seems now that they made some pretty decent kits for the day. I, and probably a lot of others, had not seen some of their better work. While this kit is not so very wonderful by modern standards, it's not nearly as bad as say, a Minicraft McLaren M8A or March 707. IIRC, the Porsche 904 released under Monogram labeling in the mid 90s was also an Aurora tool, and that's pretty decent.

It is a decent kit and represents the 1964 Nassau/1965 Shelby version of the original GT40. That said, the tires are terrible and need to be replaced. If you're going to do the 1965 Shelby version, you will not only need appropriate Goodyear tires, Halibrand mag wheels, Fred Cady decals, and will have to do some work on the front of the car with the nose spoiler and the brake scoops. The kit is a re-issue of the original 1965 or thereabouts Aurora kit.
While I'm at it, getting yourself the Replicas and Miniatures Weber carbs and manifold set for the engine.

When finished with different wheels and tires and decals it can be made respectable looking.
