On the 20th of September, 1893, the Duryea brothers make the public debut of their automobile, the first American gasoline-powered motor vehicle. I'm sure someone complained about the noise, and shortly, someone else shouted that they bet they could beat the thing in a race with their horse...Road racing was born! (Sadly, someone in charge figured that if the automobile became popular, they could charge a fee to license it for road use, and could raise that fee every other year.) --Frank
