Is that an official SCCA timing transponder next to the coils, or a data recovery box? --Frank

Your guess is as good as mine, Frank but I believe it a official SCCA timing transponder. They started showing up sometime in the later 90's. Not there in 1996. Correction, I have a photo of Paul Gentilozzi's HIGHWAY MASTERS car with the same set up. The slyxx decal says it is from 1996 soooo....I'll keep trying to track it down. Lew

There are a lot of buttons on that thing for a transponder. It's that SCCA label that throws me--but it was pro-racing, after all! It would be a killer detail to add, if we knew what it was! --Frank

I'm not really obsessed with that box. I'm just waiting for hurricane Matthew to blow down our power lines, and have nothing else to do before we loose power. The thought occurred to me, it being pro-racing, and being something that the SCCA would want to equalize, that maybe it was an engine management box. Googled that and found images of Simple Digital System's box! Add a digital read out to your photo, and you have it! Oh, man, now what do I do until the power goes out? --Frank

Thanks for the pics, Lew. I found this link doing a search earlier. It looks like it may have been up a while given that it has 39,000+ views, but there are some great detail shots on it. Johnny Miller Camaro

Since it appears next to the ignition coils in each car it could be a Rev-Limiter.. mandatory and also SCCA programmable based on displacement and induction.. just saying!

Hi Art, Yes I saw that awhile ago. It incorrectly states 1995, John's rookie year was 1996. It's a good site, lots of photos, don't get me wrong. The car itself appears "fresh" painted frame, new interior, wing on back and vents in the hood and other items look wrong to me. Bottom line this car and the one in my photos, the one he raced are two different cars, imo. The seller states Freshly restored to 1995 SCCA Trans Am Johnny Miller livery. I think the "livery" is the right word, not sure how much, if any of the original car is there. Thanks for sharing, tho. I think this is a great site. Reference material is hard to come by from the internet on most road racers. Take care...Lew

I'm not being definitive about the box, at all! I'm just making an educated guess. It's also worth noting that I have a history of being wrong (always wrong, according to the wife). The mandated rev-limiter sounds very right. --Frank

They make another appearance in my post: Trans Am Mustang, pic 6 and 7. Take a look. //// Another photo found, Paul gentilozzi 1996 car, note the blue and white wires.

Is that an official SCCA timing transponder next to the coils, or a data recovery box? --Frank I asked the question on another board, They said "SCCA data acquisition boxes".
