Here is an alternative to building the 73 Warren Tope racer. You will need the 71/72 front bumper. The grille will have to be scratchbuilt too.

Where and when did this car race? Was it a road racing or oval track car? It would make an interesting modeling project.

Yes, a stock car. NASCAR Grand National was the feeder series for the Winston Cup. (Now the Xfinity series is the Monster Energy Cup feeder series.) They also had regional versions of the series, hence Grand National East.

I am pretty sure the pictures are from Daytona 1972. You can see another 72 Mustang. They look a lot less modified than the Tope Mustang of which pictures are hard to find but here is a color one. I was surprised anyone raced these big Mustang against the smaller pony cars.

It's funny how everybody including us Ford guys perceive the 71-73 Mustang as being SO MUCH BIGGER than earlier models. Yet it's wheelbase is 1" longer, .3" lower roof, 2.5" wider body (not track), 2" longer overall for 71 & 72, then 2" more in the front bumper of the '73. It was no bigger than the 69-70 than the 69-70 was bigger than the 67-68, which was bigger than the 64-66 by similar amounts. Its front styling came almost directly from the 1969 Shelby GT350/500. But it sure LOOKED bigger. Where it differed a bunch was curb weight. Yet in building a race car by early 70s rules, that doesn't mean much. Stock it weighed as much as a Chevelle. After the early Mustangs weighed several hundred pounds less than an early Camaro. So on the street, it was a slug hauling around all that extra weight. Still, a '71 Mustang 351 was comparable to a '71 Chevelle 350 in engine/weight ratio. Terrible in perception, but a '73 Mustang weighed about 100lbs more than a '73 Camaro and 75lbs less than a '73 Chevelle. So it was still comparable in size and weight to a Camaro or Firebird of its day.
