hello forum group, I'm a long time model builder and a big fan of 60's race cars and all race cars in general. my first model kit was a Monogram Cherry bomb . i was maybe 7 years old and maybe a $1.50 model kit. now i'm 54 and building Model Factory Hiro Cobra kits at $ 300.00 Times have changed ! Being a big time Shelby Automotive fan , i'm building as many Shelby cars( mustangs, cobra's , gt 40's , car haulers) as possible. It has been a few years since my last model build so i'm building some monogram Cobra's first before i jump into the MFH Cobra kits. Looking for color photo's of racing Cobra's. i have about 5 Cobra books ,but not many color shots. Any advice on some reference photo's would be great. looking forward to completing some models and posting some finished models. Bill

Welcome. There are lots of Cobra enthusiasts here, usually at least one Cobra build in progress most of the time, and a lot of Cobra models and reference photos posted in the forums. I also recommend checking out the Historic Racing Miniatures catalog as they have produced a large selection of Cobra kits, accessories, and transkits. Enjoy.

Welcome Bill. I'm one of the Cobra enthusiast on the site. In '63 Cobras were only available in (3) colors Red, White and Black. Shelby's team color in '64 was "Viking (Princess) Blue". In '65 the team changed to the darker "Guardsman Blue". The Monogram kit represents a 427 Cobra, you could custom order almost any color. I think the MFH kits are all FIA cars which competed, for the most part, under team colors in '64 and '65. Let us know what particular car (chassis) you are building and we can help with information.

AFX, It's great to have a race car model forum. To find reference photo's and discuss models that i have a higher interest in. MFH kits are insanely detailed and each kit comes with decals to make multiple versions. Pricey for sure , but when you hunt down aluminum rims ,photo etched parts and good decals for a kit you are almost at the same price. the 63 cobra's should be easy at red ,white and black. i have viking blue and guardsman blue in Zero Paint brand. Have not used yet but colors look great. Many cobra pictures are black and white, so a light color could be silver or viking blue like this #1 cobra. found a good picture of this 427 at Targa Florio and almost positive it's black. right now making cobra's of any available decals, mostly from V-R-M and the decals found in MFH kits. no big sponsers back in the day ,so some could be just a basic number decal.

Fairly certain the #1 car is CSX3012. It was a sold to Lothar Moschenbacher un-painted who then had it painted silver.
Don't recall ever seeing the photo of the Targa car - what year is it?

found more about Targa Florio car CSX 3019 raced there in 1966 . from world registry of cobra's ...car was navy blue .
Targa Florio 1966 ..... the "isolated" Shelby Cobra 427 ....
Targa Florio 1966 ..... the "isolated" Shelby Cobra 427 ....
In Targa Florio, Ford, in the 1964 season, organized a "pharaonic" expedition bringing in Sicily, from the USA, even 4 Shelby Cobra, entrusted to well-known leading drivers and a pair of very strong Sicilian pilots (Coco - Arena) for obvious reasons of image. Those cars brought an almost sequential numbering (n.142, n.146, n.148, n.150); to these a private Cobra was added (n.152).
In short, the Cobras are always combined with the Targa Florio of 1964.
That "expedition, however, was a failure. The Cobras are very powerful, but not very suitable for the tortuous Targa route.
After those experiences not at all happy ...... seemed a closed speech that of the Cobra with the Targa; and instead, in 1966, an American crew (Ed Freutel - Tony Settember) appeared with a Shelby Cobra 427; it was assigned the number 178.
That participation was not lucky. The Cobra stopped almost immediately, by accident, during the 2nd round.
It follows that photos of that Cobra along the "Piccolo", in practice or in those few kilometers of race, are very rare.
The Friend Gabriele del Castillo made us a surprise, giving free use of visitors to this site of the Cultural Association Friends of the Targa Florio, a beautiful image of that Cobra at the Targa Florio in 1966. We thank him again.

Southern California guys in Cobras (that were built in SoCal). Tony Settember and Lothar Motschenbacher are guys I dealt with a great many times in my young life around SCCA racing. Motschenbacher was better known for his Can Am days. Tony Settember owned and drove many different race cars from the 60s to the 90s. Last I heard he still owned a racing parts business, but he must be well into his 80s now. I expect Chris (Pmodworks) encountered them both a number of times as well. That pic of Lothar's Cobra shows some cars in the background that are familiar to me as well as the Cobra. The Volvo B/Sedan and the TR4s are cars I saw often back then. Cool picture.
Welcome to the group. I'm fond of Cobras myself. I have a few kits waiting to be built. Be glad to see what you build.
