Good Morning Fellows, Always something New under the Sun. Is the Ford X 1 really a Mk II? (I think so) If so, "Big Ed" is definitely running on Firestone's (Gold lettered and striped) per attached photo. Also in researching that, I checked the good photos I have of the Mk IIBs that ran at the 67 Daytona 24 and noticed the riveted on rear fender flares that I haven't seen on anyone's GT-40 builds. And that the headers were painted same color as the body's (the "Mercury" and Bucknam's) in attached photos. Did all the MKIIB's have colored headers? Also: there appears to be a large "Bubble" in the back window of Bucknam's blue car, are my eye's deceiving me? The dual four barrels look cool. Did Holman and Moody run cars at the 67 races and were they on Firestones? Always a question about something. Thanx, John

John. I would think that paint on the headers and exhausts would burn away pretty rapidly as even powdercoating cannot sustain his application of heat. But then again, I wasn't there! As to the riveted on fender flares, I have seen those but I wouldn't have a clue as to how to fabricate them for a kit model. I would entertain any and all suggestions. I do think your eyes are deceiving you as that appears to be a reflections of the carb tray and filter since it was round. At the time, I'm not sure plexi would have been used but once again, I wasn't there. As far as tires, I have been corrected that the Gurney car started on Firestones at LeMans in 1966 and finished the race on Goodyears. So who knows?

The X1 had a 427, so I'd call it a mk2 underneath, yes.
FYI, the Meng kit comes with a separate "Gurney bump" that you can add on or not. Clever of them. It also comes with full colour instructions!

The bulge was added when they went to the dual quad manifold. Tires were growing wider just about every race so fender flares were tacked on until wider bodywork came in.

Love the Chap 2G banner, The ONLY Can-Am car the McLarens FEARED, (and they said so in 1960's newspaper race results)! Jim Hall was the BEST race driver and Engineer this country EVER created!
So, just to attach a "Bubble" on the Ford Gt Mk IIb continuing saga. It seems the "Mecury Mk I" had the "Bubble" in the back window. The attached photos show the yellow Bruce McLaren MK IIb with a "Bubble" and the AJ Foyt/Dan Gurney "Mercury" having a slight "Bubble and the carb openings in the rear deck and ventilation screens for two different Mk IIb configurations. The 66 Sebring Mk II had a small hole in the back window of Gurney's Mk II #2 in the video where you see one of the Arciero boys squirting raw gas into the carb and Dan got away. This "Bubble" is VERY Faint only an inch or two high But DEFINITELY THERE! So, don't take anything as "Gospel" as photographs don't lie! Thanx for listening. John

All of this info is on the instruction sheet for the 1967 Daytona Ford/Mercury decals I released in the past few years. I have dozens of photos from this race that I can't share as I don't have permission from the archives from whence then came. I got over 200 from the 1966 race (not all are of the MkII however) and always finding more. It is very nice to see some are open source or found their way onto the internet. I'm sure Pintrest has bunches of them either poorly labeled or missed labeled as well.
The Ford GT X1 is not a Mk II. It was from the original batch of GTs built in Slough. This car was given to Bruce McLaren to race in Can Am and USRRC events to see how the car/power plant combo worked. It was later re-built by Shelby American and re-bodied with Mk. II front and and rear body work for the 1966 Sebring race where it won. The conversions you see trying to take a MkII body, cutting the top off and calling it the 1966 Sebring winner is totally wrong. The car was a GT Spyder with Mk II nose and Tail. The only way to really build one correctly is use that challenging IMC/Testors/Union GT MKII kit and modify the windshield and center section roof. There was a resin body copied from a Monogram Slot car that did this for you many years back. They bring extraordinary prices on eBay.

Afternoon fellows, My "Short Nosed Big Ed" has been languishing since last year. When my Home Track SCCA Vette's and Cobra's are done (almost there) I'm donating them and any Mid America raceways memorabilia I have to my hometown museum. Thank for commenting on the X 1, I will soon start to finish "Big Ed" with the short Monogram nose (the '65 LeMans Mk II nose is just TOO long). Monogram body had really hard to strip green paint, love the Gold Revell body and the Unique body looks: Unique! I took some Artistic License and dropped a 427 SOHC with AMT 58MM Sidedraft Webers. I like the SOHC and may drop it in the early Ken Miles "Flip Top" 427 Cobra prototype AKA "The Turd" by Stormer inaccurate slot car body! Thrashing away with 1/16 inch letter decals for my local track cars sponsors. I have to cut out letters individually, real Pain-in-the-Arse to spell St. Louis or Barford, Chevrolet! Thanx, John
