Trying to rebuild a Tamiya kit using a Protar for the missing and broken bits. I took everything apart and into the Super Clean stripper, so I have a big box of loose parts to play with. And Tamiya's instructions, so here goes. This may take a while.
I have the tub redone so far:

This should be interesting. Do the Protar parts look like they'll work out?

This should be interesting. Do the Protar parts look like they'll work out? Body and chassis, no, but the Tamiya parts are in decent shape so it's basically a Tamiya for that. I might (will) need some Protar bits for the suspension and engine, plus the goodies that Tamiya don't give you. I don't like metal parts much anyway. You'd think same car, same scale they'd be similar if not interchangable but they're not close. But I think I've got enough that it'll work. I just realized I don't have all the decals so a call to indycals might be in order.

Thanks gorf. So far it's going OK but I'll sure let you know if I need something.
Work to date:
I didn't want to do the wiring and plumbing yet but the next bit covers the back of the dash, so no options.

It's coming along very nice !
What did you use for the tie wraps on the wiring loom? I'm always looking for new ideas.

It's coming along very nice ! What did you use for the tie wraps on the wiring loom? I'm always looking for new ideas. Wire from a mouse cable. It's the same white wire that I ran along the sides of the car. I just stripped the insulation off. I left it bare copper on the injector tubes, I painted it black on the ignition wires after it was installed. Of course this also yields white tubing which I use other places.
Sometimes I use old speaker wire (it's stranded wire). Strip off the insulation, it yields amber clear tubing and very fine copper strands. Just twist as many as you like together and you have instant cable ties. The opposite speaker lead yields aluminum coloured strands.
You know the twist ties they use on the power cords when you buy a new item? Strip off the plastic coating and you have a soft, flexible fine steel wire, makes excellent steel brake lines that bend to shape and stay that way.

All great ideas, Paul! Great looking work!

I was able to trade some leftover Protar tires for some new bodywork. Apparently I'm not the only one watching Protar tires dissolve on the shelf! I got a new body shell and some other red bits so a good deal for both of us. This is the new body shell on top of the sidepods - combination of new and old cleaned up parts - and it's as good a fit as I've seen yet. Now it's up to me to make it fit with the sidepods on the car. Easier said than done, lol.
The side pods painted and decals on. I had a partial sheet of either Shunko or Studio 27 decals, I'm not sure which but they came from Spotmodel a while back. They work fine, and some leftover Indycals supplied the missing ones (the strip along the bottom). I did this now as I can see a major wrestling match in the future and I wanted the clear coat to be nicely cured by then.
I'm getting there.
cheers guys.
