One of my favorite racing cars from the sixties, the Can-Am King Cobra, drove by Jerry Titus at Riverside in 1966... The same car in 1/24 resin slot-body,with scratchbuilt chassis and interior, MPC Eagle wheels & tires, decals from Pattos, driver from Fujimi and Chrome yellow paint by Tamiya... This resin slot car body was made and sold by a german friend of mine,Stephan Wiesel, about thirteen years ago, and after his death any years ago,it's more dificult to find it today.I've assembled many models to him in the 2000's,in slot car versions & static model cars... Greetings.

Even though I am not familiar with it, I love the subject and your build. Great job on that model! I'm interested in learning more about the real car.

Excellent job on the Len Terry designed King Cobra. Great attention to detail. The Cooper Cobras were a great force to be reckoned with. I wish I had the kit my friend John Johnson made back in the late 80's. I think it was one of his early kits that were vac-formed. I have his Ferrari 312 PB vac kit, now if I can only pull myself away from those darn open wheeled cars! Patrick

What a great build on the 1966 version. This is my favorite period shot of the 1st King Cobra with Ken Miles at the Times Grand Prix, Riverside in 1963. It seems that Dave McDonald was the actual driver in the race. And the Johnson kit and its instructions. Judging by where I found these pics, it looks like I sold this on eBay back in 2008. Silly me.

Art, The King Cobra was based on the Cooper Monaco but of course Shelby added a big block Ford to the semi-stressed space frame chassis.. I updated the Cooper King Cobra file on my Fotki or there are a couple of excellent Books that cover it, Can Am by my friend Pete Lyons or the Shelby's Cobra book.. A lot of magazine articles can be found on Google also.. Chris these will get your blood pumping!!! Thanks for the info, Chris! I'll have to do some research on this when I get a moment. -Art

Stokrod,
Thanks for the fine photos of John's kit. He was a very good friend and mentor to me. We lived about 10 minutes away from each other and spent many a day sharing our builds together. These photos remind me of how proud John was of his work.

Patrick, I was reminded that he did the original Motor Racing Replica News masthead and here are a couple of ads for his resin kits. I have the body of the 246SP, but sadly its missing the right rear panel and all the bits. I assume everyone here knows about MRRN, but if not we should do a little expose on Mike Quarterman and Jeff Edmondson's labor of love. BTW, the left ad is from issue No. 6 and the right ad is from issue 19 with the masthead from the premiere edition.

He gave me his silver paint tip (non buffing alum Metalizer with clearcoat?) that looks awesome on my Fisher Martini 917LH. Tom

John passed a few years back. I miss him greatly. He was a great friend and mentor to me. he encouraged me to extend myself and make better models. I did have two of the 246/248 cars and two of the Lancias. Much to my loss the EX "took care of them". I plan on finishing the 312PB as my remembrance to John.

The Len Terry designed King Cobra was a race car I saw quite often in the early 70s. It had been acquired by Skeeter McKitterick and he raced it regularly in SCCA Regionals and Nationals at Riiverside, Ontario and Willow Springs.
The King Cobra name confused some people as the earlier 1963 and 64 Shelby team Coopers were, as noted above, raced under the King Cobra moniker. Shelby got this project started as a replacement and upgrade from the Coopers, and then got busy with the Ford GT 40s as well as Cobras in FIA racing, along with producing GT350s and the Racing School and other projects. So this car got pushed to the back burner for a couple of years and by the time it hit the track, it was rather outdated and still lacked attention. In the Riverside '66 photos, it looks a little used and banged up. This is normal for race cars of the time.
Skeeter had a lot of fun with it and always presented it VERY clean and sharp. Under Skeeter's stewardship visible dings in the bodywork were NOT to be seen. He had it painted bright white with no sponsor markings at all. But no other visible upgrades were made. No wings, huge engines, turbos, etc. appeared and most of its active racing life was in a relaxed atmosphere racing against cars such as Willy Hauser's Lola T70 (with plastic machine guns on the nose!), Scooter Patrick in the Alfa T33, Steve McQueen in his Porsche 910, Jay Hills' McLaren Mk2, Jim Busby in his Chevron B16 and later, Bill Cuddy in his McLaren M8D...
Oh...Chris, minor correction...None of the Shelby Group 7 cars ran with a big block...this car and all of the Coopers used small block Ford V8s. The Honker Too and the 429er used big block Fords, but neither was a Shelby deal.
