Joel, the current cup cars are made out of composite material. I was just proposing that we allow them to continue to do so. Eagle36, Just goes to prove how little I really know about today's Cup cars. I was under the impression that they're still sheet metal. Hard to tell when parts start flying after an accident. Joel I didn't know either until Jeff Gordon started talking about it.

Independent rear suspensions, sequential shifters, single nut wheels, all these take the cars closer to Trans Am cars. Makes me wonder if more road racing might be coming to NASCAR.

Joel Watch a race and look at the flex in the hood! Most of the cars are a fiberglass composite (carbon fiber is way too expensive for cars that get torn up on a regular basis!) The hood flexes at least an inch and a half. All windows are now Lexan. There is no unibody construction... yet. Some of the vents are decals and some actually mimic the standard consumer version of the nameplate. No painting any longer beyond a base coat. Everything else is a vinyl wrap for the cars with a clear coat over that...

NASCAR has been using vinyl wraps for some time. This video is from 2012.

And I thought that I struggled at times with decals I've heard or should I say read more then a few rumors that Nascar is looking at doing more road races. The next gen cars are certainly well designed for that. Anything to get more fans to the races is their goal. So far the last two oval races not counting Daytona, the stands seating areas have been greatly reduced with these huge advertising tarps over the seats, and still the stands are about half full at best. I keep on saying that the days of the Good Old Boys are long gone. Today's Nascar fans want a lot more then the big family sedans and hardtops banging fenders in an endless circle. I've noticed that the newer driver core are all excellent road races. Chad Elliot is the current road course master. For that matter so was his father Wild Bill Elliot. Joel

Ya they are pretty much all raps at this point - quite an incredible process really when you watch them do it in time lapse - it's definitely a skill for sure.

Adrian, I wish someone would do a video on the full body process from start to finish. Talk about decaling issues. Can you just imagine all those massive wrinkles that that have to be taken care of from the hundreds of compound curves.

They also use heat guns to shrink and stretch the wrap. I use a low-temp hair dryer quite often on stiff or thick decals.

Joel Joel I have done a little Vinyl work on my Mini Cooper and I can tell you that it ain't easy ... creating a bubble-free perfectly flat application is almost impossible - at least for me - and I have OCD so I took my time. These guys that do the Nascar wraps though are incredible - they truly are artisans.
Rich guys will wrap there Mclarens and Lamborghini's in order to preserve the original paint colour .. its pretty cool.

Up here vinyl wraps serve another purpose. They hide the rust. At least until the fenders start falling off.

Adrian, Wow!! I never would have figured you for a Mini guy. Now me, I bought a Hyundai Elantra Sports Coupe with all the extras. Love the 14 inch wheels and low profile tires. But a Mini should have been 1st on my list.
What type of wrap did you apply?

Adrian, She's a beauty for sure. I just new that you'd have her in top notch showroom condition. Absolutely love the McLaren Papaya color. Please post one more picture with the Duel Black racing stripes.
I've neglected my Coupe over the winter months, as I just can't deal with the cold weather these days.
BTW, looks like I made a type on the Coupe. She's got 15 inch Aluminum wheels, not the standard 14 inch ones. As for the low profile tires, great handling, but just can't handle pot holes. So far this winter I've blown two tires @ $250 each and damaged one wheel. The town passed a law which says that as long as they're filling and repairing pot holes, they're not responsible for any issues caused by them. Needles to say come the next election I'm not voting for anyone who voted yes on this issue.

I drive a Chev Silverado 4x4 and it can't handle them. Next winter I'm thinking of getting a WW2 German Army half-track, that might work.
