I'm loving the progress you're making, Ben. But I have to tell you, I have to put sunglasses on before opening this thread because of the bright yellow Thanks! It’s even more intense that the Day-Glo decals on the Tamiya NSX I built recently. Ben

Ben, I've got a few dozen of Michael sheets in my decal storage boxes, so I'm heavily invested in them and his skills. I've had some very minor sizing issues from time to tome, but like you nothing that wasn't easily fixed one way or the other. As you saw on my Lotus 99t, I rather use various shades of dark gray to replicate Carbon Fiber, then decals for the same exact reasons as you.
I finally got my Tamiya kit from my brother this morning so it's on this years build list, which changes with every new model that I keep on buying not matter what I promise myself. So I'll be placing another small decal order for 3 or 4 sheets along with some accessory sheets for tire markings.

Update on the decal situation. I got the second sheet from Indycals, today, and not only does this one include the US flags next to the drivers' names, it also has additional sponsor decals that were not included on the first sheet. I guess Michael really does update these decals regularly. Pretty cool!
I'll post some photos once I finish the decals.

Doubling up the wing decals worked! Whew! I was not looking forward to cutting a mask for the Volt logo. I used some of the leftover gray decal to fill in some areas where the first sheet didn't cover, and I doubled up the Ford logos on the wing end plates. That darkened them enough to kill the yellow showing through and made it easier to match some paint to extend them to the end plate ends. I also printed up some Forgeline decals, since the car carried one when it raced at the VIR. Rather than stripping the name decals off and just using the new ones provided on my second sheet, I just cut out the flags and added them. Of course, I got all four of them in the wrong spots and damaged them when I tried to move them. Ismael was kind enough to send me a couple of his spares. I'll probably try spraying some flat white on some clear decal film and print a few more. Two steps forward, one step back. Also, I found some soon-to-be-released Volt decals from Blue Stuff. Anyone heard of them? Are they screen-printed or laser? Ben

Ben I'm just super impressed with your decaling and decaling issue solving. The Mustang looks fantastic.

Thanks, Joel and JC! So far, all of the handful of problems I've had with the kit or the decals has been self-inflicted. Ben

I got the Mustang a little farther along. The chassis and cockpit are finished. Tamiya left a lot of room for someone to add all kinds of wiring and plumbing for the fire suppression system if they so desire. I'm trying to keep my race car hobby to just aftermarket decals and seat belt harnesses. Crappy cell phone pics: I just did some basic painting on the underside, since it will mostly be covered by aero panels. Seat belts are painted medical tape with photo etched hardware and kit decals for the logos. I didn't bother to thread the tape through the hardware, since it won't be seen once the model is in my display case. I need to reposition them to make them a little more "lifelike." I still have to get the US flags straightened out and have painted and stripped the brake light clear parts twice. They have a very complicated shape with lots of black down in the nooks and crannies. Rather than try to brush paint them again, I'm just going to airbrush the outsides black and then scrape the paint off of the parts that will be clear red. I'm using acrylics, so I can just toss them in a bowl of Windex and start over if I screw them up. Ben

Ben, My building theory is basically the same as your these days. I'm just trying to build the best OOB models I can with a little bit of detailing here and there. Your Harness assembly came out looking fantastic. Just think, you saved yourself up to $25 plus shipping from Spot models for their better line.

Now that I have my house put back together and my modeling stuff unpacked, I can finally get back to the Mustang! I'm calling it a night because I keep knocking the side sills off. I just have to put them back on, add the mirrors and a few more black trim pieces, and do a little touching up on the paint. I also fixed the right rear wheel after I took the picture. I had the front and rear wheels reversed, so the rear was sticking way out from the body. This is a really nice kit! All of the problems I've had on it were self-inflicted. The photo doesn't do the paint justice. It's almost blinding in person. I've also been trying to move this side project along. It's the Fujimi Ferrari F40 LM with aftermarket decals. I started it last year as a fun build, since Fujimi kits usually go together fairly quickly and it was a simple livery. Unfortunately, this on is '90s vintage, with all of the usual fit issues of that time, plus the decals were almost too brittle to use, so it got shelved for a while. Rather than waste photo etched seat belt hardware on it, I used some harness decals left over from the Platz M6 GT3 to go over the molded-in seat belts. Most of my models are three-footers. This one will be a six-footer. Ben

Ben, I'm really thinking of doing one of Indy Cal's Motorcraft cars just because they're White and not that Darkish Gray. Sure wish some other teams run this car and we get a wider variety of sponsorship schemes.
