I'm a big time Chaparral fan but have never built a single model kit of one. So it's time to start from almost the beginning. i don't have any kits of early Chaparrals from 1961-62 so 2A will be the start. Mostly curbside kits and some slot car bodies that will be made into curbside kits. I have been very fortunate to collect Chaparral bodies from Fein-Design -Model . Some of the best quality and accurate Chaparral bodies made. Will also use Mini Exotics , LS and HRM kits for this first group of Chaparrals.

anyone have a recommendation for a close to accurate brown for the lower half of a Chaparral ? I picked up this Red Brown from Zero Paints but looks to be a little dark.

Very cool. I'm amassing a similar bunch. Does anyone know what the correct white is? Is it some sort of GM color (although the white Troutman and Barnes Chaparral 1 was done before the GM involvment and it was white).

i'm going with this white. Looks like a cream white similar to a Ford wimbledon white.

That's what I used on mine. I remember them from being up close when Hall won at Mosport - up close as in I was leaning on it - and they were a very light creamy white colour. But I was just a kid, and my memory is probably more faded than the photos of them, so who knows? The brown was really brown fiberglass, so any colour is going to be off a bit anyway.
ps: any body who has a Chaparral they don't want, please let me know! (I'm jealous of that collection!)

Bill, Like you, I've been a big Chaparral fan, but never built a single model of one. Come to think of it, the same applies to my devotion the the Mclaren's of Can Am fame. At least I have a few of those in my stash. So I'm pulling up my rocking chair, and will be following along your adventure till all 6 models are finished and ready for display.

I built the LS 2c using the Model Master spray White, it looked right, I felt the Light Cream and similar to be either brownish or yellow in comparison. Here is a pic from the So Cal NNL #1 of my Chaparral's I liked the LS Metal Carbs and although the kit had metal and plastic wheels I liked the look of the painted plastic better than machining and etching the metal ones.. I still have them around. I also picked up a set of R & D Unique Chaparral Wheels, I thought $25.00 was expensive back then but compared to MFH and others now they were a deal. I mixed up the brown interior color a dark brown , some rust and a touch of black. looks OK. The 2H is an Otaki 1/28 scale kit built box stock . I do have a Cox 2a, I plan on building the Nassau Gold Star car from 1964 , I got the decals from Starfighter and they are very nice. I also have a Union 2e, Monogram 2d, Cox 2d ( also a 2d that Quarterman sent me some odd Japanese slot car body painted purple). The LS kits , Porsche 904 , Chaparral 2c, GT 40 and others had nice white metal pieces added, like mirrors, wheels , carbs and more but only randomly so You had to get lucky. I got mine in Chinatown, Los Angeles at the Pony Store, you could buy a set of 4 banded together straight from Japan for around $34.00 in 1996. Chris

Chris, thanks for the info and sharing your models they look great . with more great decal sets coming out it really opens up more options. I would also like to build the Gold Star sponsored Chaparral and the Starfighter decals have inspired me to build that version. will most lkely have to scratch build the odd looking wheels and front fender clearance humps.

The wheels should be easy , rough cut some flat styrene into rounds, chuck it in your Dremel, same one for the carbon cutting discs, screw it on, spin it and using a sanding stix make it the right size, match them up to the wheels add some photoetch bolt heads in the appropriate pattern around the disc and add a center cap and lug nuts wheels, Done. The fenders just add some rectangular styrene strips and sand them to match the pic. note the single fog light in the front, fill in one of the pair per side. Some reshaping of the leading edge of the front fender and the tops of the rears too. I recently lost about 40,000 pics from my hard drive and of course I had quite a few of the 1964 Nassau car but given some time each morning when I research I will find most of them again. These changes should get you in the ball park Send me pics as you get them of the real car. I will be adding a folder to my Fotki too.. Chris

wheels should not be too hard, just finding a good picture is. from some pics it looks like they have 4 oval rings on flat surface. the only picture i have is the front wheel and its spinning. The Fein Design slotcar body (right) looks accurate but i only have one kit. the plan is to cut front end of LS 2C (left) and swap on to front of a 2A body (middle).

Morning Fellows, Received yesterday the IMC Chap 2E, Modelers and Monogram 2Ds. The guy who did the Monogram did an OUTSTANDING job everything almost perfect, replaced incorrect Goodyears with GREAT gold-striped Firestones. Installed mesh on all openings. Only thing I'll do is use some Modelers Webers on an engine and clear coat the body. Nice job on the Modelers Nurburgring 2D, need to brown the fiberglass chassis on both 2Ds ad aluminum the 2E chassis. The little Otaki (I believe) 2E came in last week with an Academy 2G. Both slightly off dimension-wise but cute I'll leave as-is but put a 427 engine the 2G. Got a Cox glue bomb Sebring 2A and a RENWAL "Golden Chaparral" which is still the BEST 2A. Going to combine a chopped top Monogram 2D with the Cox 2A for a Hap Sharp 1965 Riverside winged, louvered LAST 2A. Will be a long work in progress. Any recommendations for a non-yellowing rattle-can clear?

so i did a little chop and i think this will work . front of LS 2C cut off at body line and same for 2A body. screens will need body filler and headlight opening made slightly smaller.

Broke out all my Chaps for viewer info and have attached a couple of future projects. I've just downloaded about a dozen shots of Hap Sharps 1965 Riverside winner to my history files. I've always wanted to do this car since 1965. I received the Monogram 2D early this week, had HEAVY overpaint of chassis so it will become the LAST Chap 2A. The #65 is I believe an AMT or maybe Monogram slot. The other white is a Cox Sebring winner but the overpaint is incredibly tough to remove that will also donate its body to Haps. The gold 2A is the Renwal 1/25 which I believe is the ONLY full model. VERY good detail. Hate to strip that gold unless someone wants to trade bodies. Renwal also made a full kit of the gold Lola T70 Much better than the IMC/Union.
