After working on the body and paint for a week I decided to get back to the engine. The paint was a disaster and I ended up stripping it down , them re-priming it, am considering alternative paint on it so more to come soon on that part. I Made spark plug wire loom using a piece if 1/8 tubing drilling 8 holes in it, I placed that assembly into the Spark plugs on the engine adding 8 hex head nuts to simulate spark plugs and added 8 boots. Next I inserted the plug wires in the 1/8 tubing cramming all eight wires in the end actually 9 wire because of a coil wire. I made a short Cam Drive distributor cut 9 boots and spent a bit of time inserting them in. It came out just as I wanted, next is the water line that goes into the engine next to the spark plugs.. Should look just right when done more to come. click the pics for larger view... Chris

Chris, Sorry that you to have had paint issues. At least I'm not the only one that seems to have them with almost every build.
the sparkplug wirers and loom really came out looking fantastic. When you put your mind to a super detailed build, it's world class for sure.

Progress? Three steps forward two back! I have been busy on this little project and I really want to wrap it up but there is so much I have to add, more on that later, I painted the body again, after getting to the clear coat stage and having the whole thing turn into a Orange Peel, I stripped it and went a little simpler. Bare metal silver Tamiya base, 3 coats of Medium Metallic Blue Tamiya, and 3 coats of clear coat. I think the temperature here is effecting the finish being 93 degrees at 5am each day doesn't help, I am fairly satisfied with the current paint , a lot of orange peel again, but I think I can wet sand and polish it out, its not a huge body or a hard to paint color so I should be able to get it a little smoother. On the Tech side I added the water pipe on top of the Intake manifold and did a test fit of the exhaust after paint and addition of Aluminum tubing. Looks OK for now. More to come as I work on it a little each day , doesn't always show but I am taking it slow on a subject that normally I build much. Chris

Chris, Progress is progress no matter how small your steps forward are after subtracting any steps backwards. Many a a time my final number has a big fat - in front of it.
After seeing so many of your perfect paint jobs, I can surely feel your pain and frustration. Is it much cooler outside at night? Maybe that's an option for the summer months.

I love it when a plan comes together, the placement of the radiator in the back worked so well, I trimmed out the bed and dropped it down to be flush with the chassis and I like it even more. For a project that was going to be a quicky, it has blossomed into a full scratchbuild, full detail build. I decaled some of the body with pinstripe still to come.. so much more to do like a full interior, drivers seat only! and fuel tank, brake and fuel system steering and more suspension work but there is a small light at the end of the project that grows with every day!! Chris, Definitely looking more mean and lean.
Hard to tell in the pics, how did the rubbing out of the clearcoat turn out?

Hi Joel, I ended up stripping the paint twice due to what I found out was the Testors Extreme Clear Coat was not compatible with the Tamiya base color coat. I have never had that problem but it is not Rustoleum paint so they may have changed the formula. i have a older can of Testors One coat clear #1834 that I have used over Tamiya before. I decided to go ahead and decal it since I had a pretty good base coat. I am hoping there will not be a problem or I may wait until I can order some TS-13 Tamiya clear. I have been kind of lazy and not using my 5 airbrushes lately mostly due to weather but now I am pretty sure we are done with the 110+ temps and now just have to deal with wind or just use my spray booth in the shop ( again lazy) but I am liking the out come on this project and I think some of the different stuff I did will raise an eyebrow or two Chris

chris, Just catching up on your build.
Interesting that the new Testors caused the issue with Tamiya lacquer paint since it's out of the rattle can but the older Testors can never had that issue. I would think that if you had that issues, others that use Testor's clearcoat would have had it to. I still use Testors Dullcoat as I'm finally into my last bottle, but it's never had any reaction to any base color coats including acrylics from my aircraft days. I'm still thinking that the extreme heat could have been the under lying factor.
From the two posted pictures, I'd say that you've overcome those issues and are once again ready for a gloss clear coat.
BTW, I swear by Mr. Color's lacquer Clearcoats. Never, ever had a single issue with them, but have switched to Scale Finishes Gloss clear as a test. Honestly, the Mr. Color line gives me a better finish, and is half the price once thinned.
