Modifying the grille opening and re-shaping the nose worked well for me. If I build another car I would do it the same way.

Actually Rex, the Sunny 427 has 427 style rear fenders that extend beyond the back face of the trunk lid. While the 289 cars, including the 289 FIA cars, had rear fenders that had flare shapes like the 427 cars with rear fender tails that were flush with the trunk lid face, like the AMT 289.
Plus they had front fender flares like a 427. So you need to compromise between the 289 tail, and 427 flares front and rear and yet use the 289 grille opening.

Looks like we need JC and HRM (Brad) to the rescue it save most of us a lot of scratch building one off bodies.
