I hear that Trumpeter is re-releasing this kit in limited numbers and am wondering if it is a good kit or should I wait for the MENG?
I'm hearing around $125 for the Trumpeter and the MENG is going to be (maybe) in two versions- pre-painted (which will make it somewhere around $400) and an unpainted which should be substantially less.
Has anyone built the Trumpeter? From the instruction sheets, it looks every bit as detailed as an Tamiya F1 build.
Thanks in advance.

I just ordered one, it should have arrived today. $135.00 CDN, taxes incl., so you should be able to beat your $125 US.

I am using Andy's Hobby HQ and was wondering if I should find a second or third source. Also are you building the #1 or #2 car? I am curious if there is a premixed blue and a premixed orange for the #1. I know there are lots of vendors who specialize in race color paints. Michael from over on IndyCals has the decals to do the #1. And of course, I will be buying two sets. When do you plan on building yours? We could do a tandem build again if you are thinking springtime. I was looking at the Trumpeter instruction sheets (I downloaded them from SpotModel) and have some real big questions about color on the tub and all. Will be fun to build a similar project. Maybe we could get Chris Smith in on it... although I am seeing that Chris is having some issues as of late. Good to hear from you again.

Hey, Paul!
I was talking to Chris at UpScale and he wanted $199 for his one kit (now renamed "Magnifier" not Trumpeter). He says it comes with decals for both car #1 and #2. I was able to order one from HobbyLinc for $117 + shipping
He was also telling me there is an "upkit" for the model from KA that includes resin seats as well replaces a lot of the engine components with resin and metal. The upkit is $200. There is also a replacement set of tires that have the correct tread and don't use the foam inserts such as the stock kit does... those are from GY and can be found on eBay... they are only $150... only...
Also, Zero Paints makes the correct color blue that is pre-thinned for airbrush.
I will be ordering two sets of the decals from Michael at IndyCals... two sets because I know his white does have some bleed through. So that's $44
So let's add that up... $117 + 200 + 150 + 30 + 44 =$541 for a really fancy build... that is a bit rich for my blood! I'll probably just stick with the stock kit!

Well I just got the thing. The box is enormous, I'm glad the shipping was free. I got mine from Orillia Diecast but shipped out of BC. I don't know if they ship to the US but I'd bet it would be expensive. I'm building the black #2 car, but I don't know when. Almost certain to be OOB and the kit supplied decals look fine - we'll find out, lol. There are resin conversion bits out there to build the Daytona car if you want to go that route. Personally being a Bruce and Chris fan I just want the Le Mans winner. We could put both builds in the one thread, that ought to confuse everybody permanently.

The kit decals omit the Kiwi Drivers Assoc. and the NZ silver fern decals. Michael's Indycals sheet has the complete decals.

You are quite correct Daryl the fern is missing on the kit sheet. $22.00 is a bit steep just for a leaf, lol. For $22.00 decals and $25.00 resin parts I could build the Daytona winner, tempting, I was a big fan of Lloyd Ruby, wouldn't mind having one of his cars. We shall see.

For Great info on GT40's there is a ton available at www.gt40s.com/ they list each car by chassis number and have some great pics. The Tub should be a darkish Ford Blue, although all my builds have been Aluminum or matte black. The Alan Mann AMT GT40 01/02 lightweight MK-I chassis ( aluminum) 427cid with Weber Carbs,MK- II Partial body and other misc MK- II stuff. I have a couple of AMR builds going for years now a 1/16 mostly scratchbuild and a 1/24 build that includes the KA Transkit and a Thunder Valley(ultra rare) Transkit. I do like the Metal Gurney / Weslake engine from the KA kit but then I would be building a complete different car. So the 1/24 ca is going to be a Frankenstein car but detailed.. for individual part pics and full factory drawings I use Cushman GT40 at cushmancompetition.com/GT40.htm Also before I forget, the Guys at GT40s.com are experts on these cars ( and Lola GT ) dont be afraid to ask questions, after you join up, they are more than willing to help out and even the owners of the real cars will chime in to help. I was impressed with their response on my questions..... Chris

I forgot gt40.net/gt40-history/ is also a great place to obtain info and ask questions on any Ford GT40.. I did so much research to find info on the AMT GT40 01/02 that I easily forget some of the better sources. Chris

I pulled the trigger on the kit... but I will see tomorrow if I can cancel it as I have had a better offer from a member here. Just need to hear from him today and then I might be able to get this going at a more reasonable price... more down in the $400 range instead of $541... would just need the Zero Paint and IndyCals... so total would still be up around $450 which would be my most expensive build EVER but hey, it's only money, right? And it will be a great addition to my set... if I can't cancel the order, I may be building two of them! One to learn on and one to master!

Looks like this build will be on like Donkey Kong! And with all the bells and whistles.
I am popping for the kit, the KA upgrade and the tyres (feeling very European today). I just need to order the decals and find the Zero paints in the correct colors. Zero makes the specific blue but not the red. Any suggestions for a reasonable substitute?
You can find the kit priced from $99.99 to upwards of $179.99 and everywhere in between... it's crazy how the mark-up or down is working, especially since the re-pop (no longer Trumpeter but Magnifier) contains two sets of decals and not just one for the black Bruce McLaren/Chris Amon #2 car that won in LeMans in 1966. It also contains the #1 decals for the Miles/Hulme entry. I am going to order Michael's decals (two sets since I have learned my lesson!)

Model Car World makes the colors. 1oz bottles run $7.50. Lacuqer and enamals, pre-thinned for airbrushing. The Blue is Arcadia Blue for the #1 Miles car at LeMans. Car #3 was Rangoon Red. Both are Ford Factory Colors., All of the Shelby American and Hollman Moody cars were painted with colors used on Mustangs: Rangoon Red, Arcadia Blue; Acapulco Blue; Sliver Frost; Emberglow; Sauterine Gold; Raven Black; & Bright Yellow.

Ok, guys, I need to ask for some resource help.
Where can I get 1/12th boltheads, cap nuts, in other words, little fiddly bits in other words... I know Top Studio makes some of this. KA is pretty much out as the pandemic has knocked getting anything from them in a reasonable amount of time.
I can find shrink wrap and can make plugs and boots. I am already seeing this kit is lacking a distributor and plug wires which makes it weird. But I did find a great build log.
All help is appreciated!

I believe you will not see the distributor when the kit is complete.
