Because they open kits for Customer service situations they tend to have most Photo Etch and Individual trees available. Why not sell them? I was quite surprised when I checked it out. There are several Vendors on Ebay that break Down kits, just like a real car being worth more in pieces, those vendors now tend to be a bit steep but I did get xtra trees for a couple of my 1/12 Tamiya kits, and have xtra engine trees for them. Spot Models sells trees in their 'Spare Parts" section.. Chris Thanks for all that info! It helps! I did try Tamiya and they have no PE sets for sale... not for this or the T! Bummer!

Here I am polishing away, obsessing about one dull spot and it suddenly dawns on me! The whole effing thing gets shot with clear gloss after decals go on! So I guess I am at that point! Decals Sunday, then assembly day Thursday and I'll be on to the next Ferrari!

It appears there are some pieces missing from the ThunderValley stuff I ordered and even though I contacted him and told him, his textbook response was "I'll get them out to you soon...". Yeah, whatever. Besides that, looking through the instructions, there are 56 steps...I'm on 13 officially, although I do jump around some but still...a long ways to go and I don't feel like rushing it just for the show. Maybe next year Anyways, yours is looking great, sir! Can't wait to see the final result!

I'm hoping I can find a suitable place to photograph the best side and maybe hope for a shot at being the banner of the month! I don't think it will be quite there but I do know who I will nominate when his 312T is done! As always, I have learned a ton especially about how brittle the plastic from a 1971 kit can get! And about a few other things. I wish I could afford all the PE goodies but then I would be building an MFH 156 for my next project! Sorry to hear about the slow down on the 641/2. You had made good progress on it. How about a few photos of where you are instead of thinking about where you aren't? And who cares about sequence... I build the different assemblies that will get installed so I can keep doing something! By the way, did you get the decals from Michael at IndyCals? This is no knock on his product but I had no idea they are a flat or matte finish and need a clear gloss coat over them. I hope I don't get that far and screw it up!

Patrick, I have the sheet for the Ickx car from Indycals. I would say the gloss index Micheal used on these is dead on accurate for the original car. Don't forget things weren't as shiny back in 1970 (unless you're trying to duplicate a modern day show car of course).

[b Mine have no gloss whatsoever ever... if you look back at the Firestone logos on the rear wing, they are very flat. I don’t care for the look. I guess maybe the Icyx are different but the nose number is very very flat. Also on the real car, the 6 is off to the top of the white roundel whereas Michael has it centered. Thanks for the info but I’m still gonna do gloss over the top to protect them.

I hope I don't get that far and screw it up! No, I got them from TB Decals in Italy. Michael's didn't have the Marlboro on them and also, the TB sheet was printed with each decal on it's own carrier so no extra trimming. Nice decals, actually. And, I hadn't noticed until I was putting them on that the Magnetti-Marelli logo appears on the car in 3 locations but the sheet only included 2. I sent him an email pointing this out and he sent me another complete sheet to make up for it. I would have been happy with just another logo but he said, no, that's not good enough. Scored a point in my book!

Wish I had known about the Marlboro issue as I could have solved that for you as well.

Besides, with all that's going on right now, the show just may be cancelled or postponed anyway. I have the next 2 days off so should be able to make some more headway...

No point in rushing, that's true! There is always next year. At some point, I may pull the main body off my 641 for a repaint... or at least to try and polish a screw-up I made 20 years ago!

Just to add in my nearly useless 2 cents. Decals seem to vary between super glossy to almost dead flat based on the protective coating applied after printing or silk screening, it has little to none to do with the actual decals in real life. I personally prefer the Matt coating as those decals always seem thinner then the glossy ones which is very important to me.
As for the actual car's shine, well back in the 1960s & 70s race cars were primed and painted with regular auto paint in a very quick manner. There weren't any clearcoats back then, and the paint oxidized rather quickly especially reds (believe I only know that all to well). Race cars were waxed with regular off the shelf car wax: Wax on/Wax off. The shine just didn't last very long. Hence, we use to wax our cars almost on a weekly basis. With my fading memories of those years at the track, I do seem to recall always seeing the race cars at Bridgehamption, and the Formula 1 cars at Watkins Glen all looking like they were just washed and waxed. None ever left the track looking anything like that.
Honestly, what I just don't remember ever seeing is the types of finishes that I myself apply to my models, as those are what one sees mostly on a restored car these days.

And another mock-up... as soon as I can get some clear on the body (there was an issue with two decals... well, it's a long story...) I didn't get as much done as I would like. I plan on shooting clear on the body on Thursday and then doing final assembly on Friday, maybe Saturday. Then I plan on taking some photos of the 312B, the 312T4, and the 641/2 together to show the evolution. I am seriously thinking about investing in the MFH 156B just so I can have a Ferrari from decades. I have a 126C2 as well (I forgot about that!) so the photos of all them together will be pretty cool! Anyway, here is my mock-up after yesterday. I know the white radiators will sit higher but still, this gives on an idea...

I do have a problem (as I mentioned above)... I used Michael's decals and the white is very translucent... so rather than getting a replacement sheet from him (his great "Oops!" policy), I decided to use the white roundels and numbers from the original kit decal sheet. I know they are very brittle and I managed to save them (liberal use of SolvaSet) but there is a blemish on the nose... I used the huge thumbnail so you can really see this... and here is my question... is it that bad? Bad enough to cover over with the other old roundel? This has already been sealed with clear, so should I leave it? My OCDness says fix it but I would like some input. Thanks in advance.
