Have no fears, as long as you're not buying paints or any liquid with Solvents, you'll get your order in about 3 wks time. I really can't justify the shipping costs other then via USPS, and that's the super weak link in the chain. I live on Long Island, and once my package gets to the postal depot, the tracking basically stops for 10 days or so, then magically, well most of the time is on it's way to my local PO. Paints go by boat and can take longer then I have left before I'm pushing up daisies. I use Gravity of Spain for all my paints, they ship by DHL, and every order has been received in 3 days time. What's more the shipping is very reasonable. Something is a little weird with Spot's prices when it comes to shipping, and I buy almost all my models from them.

While it has been a little chilly here, and since that is not conducive to painting, I have been working on sub assemblies... The trick to the tires was to come into the warm house and let the rubber warm up. I am not putting on the backs until the stencil arrives. And the wheels are rattle can Tamiya Gold. I think it looks great. Then there are the rear uprights. I am stripping all chrome from now on and doing Gloss Aluminum. Two sets of pipes are on (that's 6 out of 12) and the velocity stack covers are installed. I think it looks so much better with them. Your comments are always welcome!

What scale? Mine is 1/12th. And how old is the kit? Mine is an actual 1971 issue so the decals were shot. Also, the plastic is pretty brittle so I have had a couple of issues. And I can tell you that putting in that BS excuse for a "seat belt" which is a rubber shaped "H" is just stupid. As usual, getting all those exhaust pipes in the correct configuration takes some doing but after the first set teaches you, well... also, there is a lot of filling and sanding where the three front pipes come together in a triangular adapter to go to a single pipe... after you figure out which pipe goes where... luckily, they stay pretty snug in the exhaust ports for fitting. I should tell you that getting this... to look right is a bitch. The white pieces are two parts and filling and sanding then getting the white to lay down correctly is time consuming... and these are very prominent on the rear of the car. When you look at it, it is about 15 pieces... and getting those spring wires in place is a bitch. But you have to have them to hold the exhaust pipes in place. Let's see... there are no major fit issues on the body panels... just make sure you get the cockpit seated all the way into the top of the body or the bottom won't fit. It has to do with the instrument panel snapping into position. Takes a bit of oomph but otherwise it won't fit! I took car of the decal issue with Michael at IndyCals (He also sold me the correct black hounds tooth material for the seat. If you do buy that, don't do what I did... I did the bottom first and then the sides. I think it would look better doing the sides first. You just paint the cockpit Italian Red and put the hounds tooth on... I think it was $12 dollars) and the seat belt kit is coming from Italy along with tire stencils. Mike T here has a set that you could probably get from him. I didnt know he wasn't using his. More to come later...

I did strip all the chrome. I think that was your advice. It was mainly the struts and all for the suspension. I am doing all that in gloss aluminum. Thankfully, the front and rear wings are in red and white. Oh yeah, the mesh covers for the velocity stacks are an MFH accessory part D-977. They say they are for a DFV Ford but they fit just fine. They were ordered from Spot Models and took less than a week. They come 8 to a package so two packs are more than enough. They really do finish off the velocity stacks. I can't imagine running a race without them as you would be sucking debris into the engine! I'm sure there will be more stuff... but that's where I am. I am frustrated that I can't do any painting of large boy panels since it just now got into the mid 50s. Maybe tomorrow or next Tuesday/Wednesday if I can get the rear wing gaps filled and sanded. I am using Tamiya Pure White and that will go down first on the nose wings and the rear wings. The rest of the car will get Tamiya Italian Red. By the way, that Tamiya Gold really lays down nice with two or three mist coats! Keep on howlin'!

Wow. Amazing what a little piece of mesh can do...all the difference in the world! Looking good, sir! Yeah, really especially since I did the stacks with Molotow liquid chrome and they didn't come out smooth. The mesh helps do a lot of things. I just like the look as well. Thanks for the kind words!

I have 8 of the 1/12th Tamiya kits, all original issue. 3 built (Honda, Siffert Lotus, Hulme M23), 5 to go (312B, 312T, 312T4, Fittipaldi Lotus, Wolf). I have new decals for all except the Lotus. The 312B kit I got had been started, all the parts are off the trees, not sure if its all there. But it was $50.00, so you takes your chances. Fortunately I'm very familiar with Ferraris of that era so I more or less know what the car is built like. Even so its going to be a nightmare.
I build other kits at the same time deliberately so I can relax and don't get too fixated. So I built a couple of Revell kits. They are anything but relaxing - ask Joel. I have the Gremlin to finish and a Camaro on the go, so by the time I start the 312 you should be well on your way, and I can look over your shoulder and cheat, lol.
I do like your intake mesh covers by the way, nice touch, but I think you bought all of them. Keep up the good work and please keep posting!!
cheers mate

I have around 10 built in the 1/12th line between Tamiya and Protar. I have about 15 left including the rest of the T line all the way to the T5 kit from Protar. I have one Heller kit, the JS11... I have an order in with a fellow for rubber tires and correct wheels. Gonna cost more than the kit! I have all sorts of cars, McLaren, Matra, Wolf, Lotus... just about any 1/12 kit I could find... I’ll never be able to buy any MFH kit... too pricey! All the parts on your 312B off the trees? Wow... if you need any help identifying parts or numbers. Spot Model should be able to restock those mesh covers right? I have enough for one more V-12 and a V-8. Let me know if I can help...

Those mesh covers really make a difference taking it to the next level. Very cool along with the rest of the build. Love those wheels as well. I don't think I've ever done a 1/12.

As Ismael said, those real mesh covers look amazing, and are as realistic as anything in scale can get. The pictures of your engine to date, really look outstanding. The cast Aluminum looks just as I would expect the real deal to look. And there's just enough color to help fool one's eye that this isn't the real deal except for the white bottle cap.
I can only imagine the issues and difficulties you had with the 12 separate exhaust pipes. In 1/20 scale I try to stay away from Tamiya kits and go Ebbro whenever possible because Ebbro tends to combine as many pipes as possible for easier assembly. I've screwed up more Tamiya F1 exhausts then I care to admit over the years.

I really have learned a lot about taking my time with wiring and fuel lines. And I just felt there was no way a real car would not have the mesh covers. As far as the exhaust pipes go... my attempt at the Honda was a disaster. The same happened on a Tamiya motorcycle. That's why I am doing lots of dry fitting. In addition, each individual pipe has a pair of separation lines and a sink mark on the end going into the engine exhaust port. So lots of sanding and filling... Thanks for the nice words. I did a black wash over the aluminum coat... I am always worried about how it looks.
