An oddball car for sure. Here's an odd question - was this car right hand or left hand drive? Or either? The Monogram kit I have is for a left hand drive. I have a photo of the cockpit, LHD. I have exterior shots of the car in action, clearly RHD. Any of you guys know the answer?
cheers
Paul

Great Question, The #6 Ford Motorsport car was RHD , wasnt that the car destroyed at Riverside, the 7-11 Car was LHD, maybe they learned something on the first rendition. I have to check my GTP book may be there is an answer why. but Yoli needs me to run to the market and I will check when I get back... Chris

Why do you think they changed it after Riverside, Safety? The exhaust exits the Left, and Turbo Pop Off in most photos so that couldnt have helped the LHD cars? I wish I had stayed in touch with the VP of Ford Global from back in those years, met when no one here could fix my Merkur, he had 2 Factory mechanics flown over to take care of it. It was a Bullet when they got done!! Do you think the first version being built in Germany by Zalspped and the second here by probably Pratt and Miller had any thing to do with it.? Chris

Doesn't look anything like a Mustang. Why do (or did) manufacturers insist on branding a race car with Mustang or Camaro (such as NHRA today) when they don't look a thing like the cars?

At least Ford called it the Mustang GTP unlike the current Mustang Mach E which looks like a mistake in the design office!

It's actually not a bad kit at all. The body can lift off to show a full detail car. All I have to do is supply the detail.
This weird thing had a carbon fiber chassis, not black but an odd dark brownish colour. A little experiment, Tamiya TS46 light sand base, with several coats of smoke over it until I got this:
It's not assembled, that's just a test fit (it fit's nicely). I don't know about the carbon fiber colour match but I've figured out how to paint a fiberglass Chaparral chassis I think. If I ever get a Chaparral to build.
Waht do you think?

The body fits perfectly. Way to go Monogram!
Rumour has it that Jack Roush quit this program because Ford wouldn't let him drop one of his V8's in it. Sooo..........
Yep, it fits. I am so tempted, lol. Maybe I'll have to build two of these.
I have 2 sets of decals but I don't like either one, so I ordered from Indycals, and I really should get back to the Ligier from Hell....er.
Cheers Paul

That would be because of Ford of Germany and Fords new World class cars (Lol, like that worked) They wanted the Turbo's like the Merkur, T-Bird, Mustang and other assorted cars that were being pushed on the public, The Zakspeed Turbo really did put out some heavy duty Horsepower in race trim, some 1,000hp at one point, but it wasnt a a production engine by any means. Hey they knocked the crap out of everybody with the Trans Am and IMSA Mekurs, they were powerful and fast, won both Championships too. Roush was only doing NASCAR so his input wasnt too meaningful. Chris, I believe Roush Racing was doing Trans Am and IMSA GTO about the same time as the Mustang GTP. Willy T Ribbs, Lyn St James, others. Later he ran Merkurs and the Cougar GTO car. I think he started the NASCAR team after that, late 80's I'd guess.
As to the "Zakspeed" turbo engine, it was really a hopped up Cosworth BDD. No offense to Zakspeed, they were a great outfit, but that motor made great gobs of power and blew itself to Mars more often than not.
Cheers mate.

There's a great write up in Michael Quarterman's Motor Racing Models # 32 on the Mustang gtp. The 1.7 liter Zakspeed version had the driver on the right, the 2.1 liter car had the driver on the left. The induction / exhaust was on different sides on each engine. If they would have went with the v8 they would have dominated. Designed by Bob Riley. The tub was built with the help of Ford Aerospace, the car was finished in Jack Roush's shop with help from Protofab.

Paul, Just ran across your Mustang GTP car build. Super impressive for sure. I really love the color for the chassis you came up with. I've got one in the Stash that I'm itching to build this year, and I actually bought decals for it from Indy Cal, pretty sure it's the 7-11 scheme. With your positive assessment of the build it's getting moved closer to the top of my build list for sure.
